I never said they were living a life on benefits. What I was saying that apart from trying to claim sickness benefit now, the first time I have claimed anything in over 44 years of full time working, I have had to provide for everything. I didn't go cap in hand to no one when times were hard - that is what life deals you.
We lived our life simply no holidays, no cars, just to save for the emergencies of life!
Maybe others should have followed the same path!

I don't mean to be rude (I mean that sincerely not sarcastically), but I'm finding this assertion and your attitude to others accessing help hard to reconcile with your other recent posts- eg:

In defence of Shaw Trust, I found them to be excellent when I was first involved with them in 1998
They worked with me to find a voluntary job that suited me. So much so, that the hours I had initially were 3 hours per day twice a week, were increased to 50 hrs min over 6 days - including Christmas Day & Boxing Day. Sometimes getting there at 5am for an early morning start mixed in with finishes at 7pm. I stayed there for over 3 years and loved every minute.
Shaw Trust were always there for support.
I remember the last day of working there, I didn't want to leave. The one and only reason I did leave was because it was costing me money to get to and from the place. The travelling expenses only managed to cover 4 of the days, the other 2 I had to provide for out of my Income Support. Each day I had to travel a 60 mile round trip. There was no public transport as the venue was way way in the country - part of a large private estate.
I only hope they haven't changed over the years as they were just brilliant!!

I'm happy to support both you and the OP's parents in your time of need (as I will hope to be supported myself) but you seem to be intent on judging others for being in a position similar to your own whilst at the same time denying your own position. Why?

Where people ask for help to solve a problem - in return they receive anything but! This thread is a prime example!
I would have to disagree your posts are a prime example! These for example just from page 1...... pot, kettle, black springs to mind.
    Yes precisely.
I cannot believe that there is no running water in the kitchen or waste connected.
I fitted out my new kitchen in the summer of 09. I'm no carpenter, plumber or kitchen fitter.
But I made a reasonable job of it on my own.
Errr no, they should be getting something like £215pm based on a £70,000 mortgage.
Unless they borrowed money in the past by way of equity release. In which case they will not get any help on that debt.

They can only get help on the amount borrowed to buy the house.

So based on your figures, they are having to pay £177pm extra towards their interest out of other benefit money. That would have been their choice!
I know you are trying to help here. But it seems that the OP's parents have released some equity already and that is gone.
Now they are looking for charitable money to improve their home further.

Totally wrong in my eyes. I have had to save, pay into pensions etc in my working life at the expense of having a lifestyle no better than it would have been on benefits. Yet I have had to be self sufficient and looked at it that if no money is there then have to do without!
This is the problem with this damn country!
You are always made to suffer if you do the right thing!
    *SIGH*

Firstly, it is not the case of wanting a 'free' kitchen, bathroom, conservatory or anything else on 'state money'. I have already bought the kitchen for them, I was looking for help with fitting it.

Secondly, there was no mention in my post of help solely from the government or taxpayer - I simply said any financial assistance - be it any organisation or source that could provide help/grants/loans/whatever form of support.

Thirdly, in relation to the mortgage - you stated that the interest would be paid - which, as I said before, is at 0.69% - I was unaware of any other amount being paid to 'come off the capital', as you did not make this clear or say anything to this effect in your post.

Finally, for all the money that my parents have paid into the system through tax and national insurance contributions all their working lives, how do you, someone who is claiming benefits himself, have the sheer audacity to criticise others? You're an absolute hypocrite and obviously well-known amongst the MSE board community for your double standards and arrogant attitude. This is supposed to be a forum for support and advice, not criticism and snide remarks, grow up and do something more constructive with your time.

    AdamHex,
    Hi ..
Are the new units going in the same place as the old ones you removed
Are the electrics still in place?
Why don,t you have a go at fitting it yourself?
There is lots of advice on how to do this if you google and it may come in handy in the future
