  • I wonder how long it will take mobile operators to make these changes.
My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

They probably wont its just a proposal as it is a good revenue stream most operators advise that these "free phone" numbers will cost when you connect to them

A good idea, but I wonder if we'll see a return to the cat and mouse game of mobile providers blocking access to the 0800 numbers of calling card companies, then said companies moving to a new number, as used to happen when Orange used to do free 0800 calls?

0800 and other freephone numbers are already free on Giffgaff.

    I've had free 0800 since 1996 on Orange :)
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

As far as I am aware (happy to be proved wrong:)). Vodafone are the only network which do a tariff which includes all calls to 08 numbers.

At about £60.00 pm its not cheap but if you want truly unlimited calls and texts and inclusive 08 numbers its a good deal.

I don't get it. How do they propose to stop the Calling Card dodge that saw an end to free 0800 (&c.) calls on Virgin, 1-2-1 and Orange? What about 0800 data calls?

Does GiffGaff stop the Calling Card dodge?

The networks would probably just stop access altogether to the 080x number in question if it is a calling card.

At which point the calling card company move to a new number and the whack-a-mole game continues.
  • Did you know if BT dial 131,123 4567, you hear an advertisement for Cable & Witless?

T-Mobile allowed it with the Flext price plans, perhaps the plans were considered to be too good value for money (included 0800, all 08xx variants, international calls, texts and MMS as well as UK calls, texts and MMS). The plans started at around £30 as I recall.

Only available to existing customers now who already had the plan at cut off.
