i've just watched this Channel 4 Dispatches programme too. I like to think that I'm a reasonably "clued up" shopper, but I had no idea of the some the practices which were adopted in the fishing/food industry. I'd always suspected that fish fingers were a combination of mixed white fish, but to label fish as fresh when it could have been frozen for anything up to a couple of years, before being thawed out and put onto the fresh fish counter is downright dishonest.
Well, we all know now, don't we, when buying pre-wrapped fish, or even fish that looks fresh on a fish counter, to look for the fine print at the bottom of the label which says "Has been previously frozen."
The problem for most of us is that if we live inland and not on the coast we have very little opportunity for buying truly "fresh" fish, i.e. caught & landed the same day, or the following day, so we do have to rely on supermarkets to label fish correctly.
But I was even more appalled to see the dreadful conditions under which Asian Tiger Prawns are produced in Bangladesh i.e. in ponds which often contain leaked sewage water, or have banned toxic chemicals poured into them to try and kill the infections which the fish have suffered as a result of being reared in sewage-tainted water. Much as I like these in Chinese food I'm afraid they're definitely off my menu now unless I can be TOTALLY sure of their origin. I can see some of us making ourselves rather unpopular now when we walk into a Chinese takeway or restaurant and ask to see the origin label on their prawns before we give them an order but it does goes to show why some people can be so unwell after eating food whose origins they are unsure of.
What an eye opener this week has been on Channel 4 regarding the fishing industry - first Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's magnificent campaign & petition to end the EEC Fish Discards policy where millions of fish have to be thrown back dead into the sea to avoid breaching fishing quotas - (currently running at over 400,000 signatures) and now learning about the origins of some of the fish we're eating.
I approve of power & knowledge being given to back to the consumer to keep the supermarkets and other fish providers on their toes.:T0 -
I've taped that Dispatched programme just cos it's Dispatches and I like to watch current affairs, and WHAT on earth is going on in fish selling?!
Surely freezing fish twice without knowing it is a recipe for food poisoning if ever I heard one? Shouldn't the authorities be onto this?
Will watch as soon as I can get the Sky+ box to myself. Please call me 'Pickle'

We (very occasionally) substitute mince with a value brand of dog food when making shepherds pie. With a good gravy and plenty of onions, one would never know the difference.
;)
 You are joking??
Seeing what goes on behind the scenes I don't even fancy meat for human consumption - so what do yu think does into dog food?? If you're that starped for cash why not just eat veg??Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day. -- Sally Koch0 -
If anyone wants to sign the petition to change EU regulations that make compulsory for fishermen in the North Sea to throw back in the sea, dead, perfectly good fish, here is the link:
