Will BT Infinity speedup all standard broadband?

Can anyone answer this question I have about BT Infinity?
I live some distance from an exchange so I currently get 1Mb broadband( even though I pay for upto 8Mb!!!) BT infinity is coming to town, so my question is will I now get a true 8Mb from my current provider ( PO broadband) when BT infinity is activated in my area or will I still only be able to get 1Mb?

    Infinity will have no impact on existing ADSL as it is a different technology. You'll need to get Infinity to see any change (or the same basic product from a different reseller).

    If you are with the Post Office for broadband then the fact that BT Infinity is coming to your area will have no effect whatsoever on your P.O broadband, why would it ?
    BT Infinity is FTTC (fibre to the cab) the green BT box you see on roads/streets....the reason you get 1Mb on a upto 8Mb broadband is due in the main to the distance you are from the exchange (the further away the slower your connection)...you must be quite away from the exchange to get 1Mb, or have a 'fault'
    Infinity in simple terms moves the broadband equipment from the exchange to the new cabinet next to the existing green BT cabinet, and this new cabinet is connected to the exchange via fibre, so the distance to the exchange is now not an issue, the distance from the cabinet to your house is the only variable, and as most people would be at worst a couple of hundred metres away from the cab, they can get upto 40Mb connections....however although BT have made FTTC available to other ISP's on a wholesale basis, I dont think the PO have shown an interest,

    Basically,BT will be providing broadband via the Infinity product in much the same was as Virgin Media provide there's,except from the cab it will be normal copper dropwire to the house & not a COAX feed,which VM use.

    Thanks for the replies, I just thought that it was effectively a complete upgrade to the line as they appear to be taking out the old cabinets and the new ones are about 10m from the old ones?

    They're not taking out the old cabinets - the old cabinets will continue to be used by probably the majority of users for the short term future - Infinity products are also not being rolled out everywhere... and really confusingly not all houses in a certain postcode might be able to get it... it may only be 20% or 95% of houses in a postcode who can get it... it's a barrel of worms but if you can get it then go to it... it works most of the time and far better than the 1ish meg I used to get too :) Unfortunately you will pay a lot more for it and it's not available from as many resellers as normal ADSL is... yet

    If you put your phone number in here;

    http://www.btwholesale.com/pages/static/Community/Broadband_Community/Coverage/ADSL_Availibility_Checker.html#

    You may see this;

    (My own line)
    For Telephone Number *********** on Exchange *********

    Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

    Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 5.5Mbps. Similar lines predicted with this speed have achieved ADSL Max line speeds in the range of 4.5 to 8Mbps.

    Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 32.7Mbps and upstream line speed of 7Mbps.

    The actual stable line speed supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use. This speed may change over time, to ensure line stability is maintained.

    That link is great
    I get the following

    Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 2Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 1Mbps and 3.5Mbps.
    Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 2Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 1.5Mbps and 4.5Mbps.
    Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 31st March 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 34.7Mbps and upstream line speed of 8.6Mbps.
    The actual stable line speed supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use. This speed may change over time, to ensure line stability is maintained.
    Thank you for your interest.

    Most of this makes sense however what exactly does this mean -Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 31st March 2011?

    according to the test it already has WBC FTTC Broadband?

    Probably means that 31/3/11 was the backstop date for the phase of the rollout your exchange is in, but that in fact it has already been equipped.

    if its headlined at 8mb then its simply a headline speed, its not a guarantee. you're not paying for a specific speed, you're paying for the service, and theres little that can be done about the speed.

    the reason you get 1mb will definitely be an exchange distance, but it will also depend on how bt have set up your line, the quality of your line, the quality of your set up, the quality of your phone socket, you could probably get more but it would be an unreliable service, its literally a "slow and steady wins the race" when you are far away from an exchange.

    call bt and ask them about digital line management and to configure your speed to the best available without it becoming unstable, or try plugging the dsl into the test socket in the main master socket in the house. if theres an increase of speed then youll need a new face plate, very simple.

    and no bt infinity wont affect post office broadband, dsl has nothing to do with infinity from the exchange, its more similar to how virgin do it without coax cables. bt infinity is a cable service so it will be a different speed to the standard dsl you get now since its not using the same exchange equipment you are getting your internet from now. but if you dont live near an exchange i assume you dont live in a major city, so wont be able to get it anyway.

    It means that your exchange is ready to provide FTTC, however the cab that services your line has not been enabled/upgraded to provide you with FTTC.

    the 31/3/11 date is a holding date. Keep checking it occasionaly to see if it updates.
