I follow the recipe in the manual for rolls adding melted butter to the mix then form the rolls and coat with a little melted butter before leaving to rise, find they only need 15 mins to cook and then brush again with melted butter once cooked before they cool down they are then nice and soft and have never had any complaints from the kids which is amzing as they are two v.fussy children!!!!!0

Hello, a newbie breadmaker here
What model breadmaker would you recommend? I'd like to spend less than £50. I like the look of the MR one on amazon for £38, but will the size of the loaf be too small? Do I need a larger one?

Hi, Argos have this one for £44.99 (price valid until Friday)http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4233419/Trail/searchtext%3EMORPHY+BREADMAKER.htm
or from Morphy Richards direct (free p&p) for £45 http://www.morphyrichards.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Product=48282
I think I know which one you are talking about on Amazon, it seems to get quite good reviews http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/bread-maker/morphy-richards-48268-fastbake-breadmaker/reviews/
I have a different model & tend to stick to 1.5 lb loaves as the bread doesn't last as long as shop bought with it not having all the extra additives in it.

I thought you needed sugar for the yeast to activate ?
I customized my FB basic bread recipe and use value flour, half water half milk and no milk powder, olive/sunflower oil instead of melted butter, half the amunt of salt and a large teaspoon of fresh yeast (free from Asda). Always makes a lovely loaf , all the family prefer it to shop bread.
I love my BM :T
I've never bothered with milk in mine, would be interesting to try though
and yes sugar is needed for the yeast, I always use honey though0 -
:j i'm loving my bread maker - do nearly all loafs on the french bread setting, but have also made sesame burger buns (perfect toasted with hm burgers!) sun dried tomato loaf, pizza bases. my friend has given me the recipe for a gorgeous chilli jam i'd like to adapt it for the breadmaker soon.
i will be having a go at naan breads this week too!0 -
Just spotted that Amazon have a good price on the Morphy Richards at the moment.
Now trying to decide if it is OS to buy another one (my last one died last year)
I suppose the real reason for having one is knowing what is in your bread rather than moneysaving.0 -

I only use organic ingredients in my wholewheat bread, and I calculated each loaf to cost about 40p... I don't think you would get an organic loaf for anywhere near that price in the shops0 -
We have just got a MR Fastbake and I wanted a wholemeal sandwich recipe. So I adjusted the white one, I also cut down the sugar slightly as the bread came out slightly sweet. this recipe also gives great rolls if you take the dough out 25 minutes after the beeps, make a 2lb loaf into 12 rolls and leave for 40 minutes to prove - then bake for just over 15 minutes at 210 deg in the oven.
Wholemeal sandwich Loaf
1 12 cups warm water (not hot or cold)
2 tablespoons marge (level - we use pure sunflower)
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 tablespoons skimmed milk powder (asdas best)
2 tablespoons sugar (level)
4 cups of wholemeal flower (for a lighter loaf use 3 wholemeal 1 white) we are using tescos strong stoneground wholemeal.
1 1/2 teaspoons yeast (allinsons small tubs)
plus 2 60mg vitamin c tablets crushed
use the sandwich setting 11 with a light crust. 2 lb loaf setting.
This gives us a wholemeal loaf that rises to the top of the tin and gives a light texture and softish crust - great for my sandwiches.
to keep the crust softer when it comes out of the tin, put it to cool on a tray covered with a clean teatowel.
Enjoy
