I dont really want to modify my car, but it would be interesting to see a Golf with HIDs in so I can compare against Xenon bulbs

Don't get the blue ones - they look good but they're not legal strictly speaking. These ones are legal because they just give off a slightly blue tinge, the other ones they have are properly blueish.0 -
I think you want these ones:

Do you reckon the Night Breaker Plus will be brighter and have a longer beam?0 -

Well standard halogen is the only way for most people as HID requires more money on the kit and may also need projector units, also a little know how to fit it. I have been using HID 55w 6000k bulb kit for over 2 years, I just ordered a set of 4300k hid bulbs (oem colour - most lumens). This setup are about 4-5x brighter than halogen. You would need to spend time reading up on it if you want to go the HID xenon way.0

thanks for that. for now i might just stick with halogen bulbs.
i'm guessing all the rally/high performance ones are illegal?! lol0 -
80w/100w halogen are off road use only, not legal for normal driving, they could also melt the cars light's wiring as someone mentioned. Legal driving lights are 55w (I think), I have used the phillips xtreme vision they are a big improvement, around £18 I paid on ebay a few years ago.0

hid kits are easy to fit but i wouldnt go for a bulb rating of over 6000k other wise they look cool but you cant actually see.
i had 150w bulbs in my car (it wasnt a road car) and it melted the plugs, wires & fuse and warped the lamp covers!!!!!
i would seriously look at getting the HID kits. when these were first coming on the scene and imported about 20 kits and stuck them on ebay they went fast and nevr had any come backs0 -
