Just because I dislike the food does not stop me having the right to eat it or complain about the service.
It is either the only option or not. Not "about the ONLY"
HGV drivers are not banned from using McDonalds so your thread title is wrong as well.
Could you provide a link to the facts please?0 -
The vast majority of HGV drivers don't rely on fast food anyway, each week my other half goes away with enough food to feed him all week, camping gas and a stove, so he has hot food all week, (not sure that I would like a Pot Noodle for breakfast), but he manges all week with hot food and drinks. Took a bag of stir fry with him yesterday.0

And are MacDonalds really the only place open overnight? I'm sure that every place I've seen where HGV drivers park there is some entrepreneur with a van selling food.
Or is the OP moaning about not being able to get a MacDonalds cv a drive thru and then continue driving whilst eating. Something which can't be safe.0 -
I know for a fact that my local mcdonalds does not allow people of any age, size, occupation walk through the drive through.
Nor does it let anyone on a pushbike go through for the drive through for Health and Safety issues. This has been in place since the day it opened and there was even a sign put up saying so.
I am convinced that there are other convienient places also to eat or other options.
It would seem from an earlier post that if the HGV driver is organised he can eat very well throughout the week!!0 -
I think reading between the unclear lines - HGV drivers have been in the habit of parking up, walking down the drive thru lane and buying a meal. McDonalds have presumably had a bit of a H&S audit and have realised that even with HiViz on, having pedestrians standing in the road is not safe and are now saying they will only serve people in/on a vehicle from the drive through hatch. As HGV's can't drive through they can't get a meal unless they go into the main restaurant part (if open). Maybe the issue is that the hatch is the only part open (often due to security issues) and so if they can't drive through they can't get food.
So if that's the case I have to say that whilst its unfortunate I can understand where McDonalds are coming from - a drive thru is clearly designed for vehicles and no insurer is going to be happy with foot traffic sharing the space. Most McD's are pretty small outfits rather than truck stops - it may also be the case the local residents are getting fed up with extra HGV traffic in the middle of the night so McD is responding to local pressure to stop encouraging them.
We all appreciate that overnight HGV traffic is necessary, but its not necessarily McD's job to facilitate that by allowing potentially dangerous use of its restaurants. As suggested above the other option is to take some hot food or cooking facilities along and use that with perhaps other cold food for later in the journey.Adventure before Dementia!0 -

Possibly. I've only ever seen burger vans open at night at 2 places. All the others I've seen in laybys are only open in the day.
As far as I know, the McD's that are open 24 hours, only have the drive-thru window open and as the lorries can't go through that bit, which would be why the drivers have to go up to it on foot.0 -
I think Weston Dave is correct. This will be less about discriminating against HGV drivers and more about health and safety concerns, annoying local residents, and stopping other less desirables from rocking up to the drive-thru window in the middle of the night, like drunk pedestrians and chavs on bikes.
It is unfortunate for the HGV guys that they have taken this stance but I can see why they have done it.0 -
I think the policy makes sense - potentially there was a near miss where someone was almost knocked over so things were changed.
McDonalds are a private company and can refuse service on safety grounds.
McDonalds certainly don't have the monopoly on late opening food establishments - certainly there are plenty of bakeries across the UK which actually open at 3am as that is when their day starts. Far greater choice of better quality food.
HGV drivers could also pack some sandwiches or any precooked items in their cab - they don't need to live off McDonalds.Legal team on standby0
