I dont know why I bothered qualifying as an optometrist if the public think we're just money grabbers.

    Because it's very lucrative perhaps?

Less lucrative than being a teacher?

so I guess the rest of you work for the love of it, not interested in making a decent living?

No one forces you to buy glasses, or more expensive glasses. You don't shop in Waitrose,Selfriges, etc. if you can't afford to.

The average order value in my shop is 200£, most glasses last 2 years therefore that equates to less than £2 a week for most people. For alot of people they wear them at least 12 hours a day. For some its the first thing they reach for when they wake up in the morning and take off last thing at night. What else do you know that costs so little yet improves so much for so many? Holidays, boots, games consoles, cigarettes ect?

I don’t have a problem with the price of the eye test, I think opticians do a worthwhile job and deserve to make a small profit on the transaction. I do object however to the high prices charged for lenses and especially frames. There used to be a good selection of decent looking affordable frames in most optician shops, but now there are less and less. The majority of frames are so called ‘designer frames’ which usually cost an arm and a leg. If opticians really care about being labelled as ‘Rip Off Britain’ candidates, they should get on to their suppliers and get them to provide more affordable frames or change their supplier.

    All in favour say AYE!

Have you read this thread? Even if we used identical products to those available on line, we'd would still be more expensive due to

    1. Eye Exam subsidy
    2. Overheads
    3. Less Buying Power.

Personally, I can't compete with the internet and cross-subsidising supermarkets, so I don't try to. Instead, I offer superior products, with expert face to face advice and quality service. Some folks want the cheapest option possible, that's fine. But judging by how busy I am, there are plenty of folks who value what I do and look at the total package when judging what value is and not cost.

I'm going blue in the face now!:rotfl:

I think we're all in danger of making spectacles of ourselves on this thread now;);)
