Nah - it must be a rip-off. The Daily Mail, Rip off Britain and James Murray Wells say it is, so it's definitely true!:rotfl:
Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.

Look, if you don't want to buy glasses at £200 a pop then you don't need to. Get basic frames, cheap lenses and SHUT UP.

Considering most of the public don't think twice about spending hundreds of pounds on clothing or shoes that they only wear once or twice, spending a couple of hundred pounds on glasses that they will wear every day shouldn't be that big a deal. Instead of spending a lot of money on PALs (varifocals) or bifocals, buy two cheap pairs of single vision glasses (one for distance, one for near). No-one forces you to buy expensive glasses in the same way that no-one forces you to buy designer clothes or drive an expensive car.

I am not one of the "most" of the public that spends hundreds of punds on clothes that I won't wear, and I also don't spend a "rip off" price of £200 for a pair of varifocal glasses that I can get for £60. Oh, and the advice about buying two "cheap" pairs of glasses, one for reading, one for general vison is even more harmful for your eyes. That is why I changed to varifocals. If I choose to buy an expensive car then it would be for the comfort and "extras" it has. With glasses, I get the same end result when spending £200 or £60. So why pay more!

Just because you don't see a difference doesn't mean that there isn't one.

Do you go into all shops and moan about the cost of everything? After all, no-one sells at cost price. There's staffing and premises overheads, equipment to buy, stock to buy, taxes to pay... all these go towards the cost of the glasses.

I take it that where you work, you give away all your products for free?

From my personal experience the penultimate pair of varifocals I bought from Factory Specs or some such. They were under £100 and they had cheap varifocal lenses.
The last ones were from Specsavers and with Pensioner discounts etc. were about twice that. Top of the range photochromic lenses and the difference was amazing!
The Specsavers ones although twice the price, have lasted twice as long with much better fitting and comfort.

You get what you pay for! (No I don't work for specsavers)

Actually I don't work!:j And I don't moan about prices. I always buy where prices are cheapest. Doesn't everyone on these boards do that? So, no, I don't moan about everything being expensive because I seek out the bargains!

Are you on the dole? Be rich for you complaining about business's making money (eg paying tax) seeing it'll help support you if thats the case.

No, I am not on the dole:mad:, as you put it. In fact I have a lifetime of regular work behind me, and have paid a plethora of taxes in my lifetime so far, so I make no excuse for seeking out bargains!
  • Lymington market - £3.99 a pair - know the strength I needed after optician visit - bought basic frames at time but now got a spare pair and am really pleased with them.

Well done:j you see what I mean? The prices opticians charge for glasses are outrageous!
