Hi, Welcome and get a call through to the local fire service (numbers can be found online) they will come out free of charge and install long life smoke alarms to EVERY ROOM that needs one.. rooms with high sleepers/bunks need them in too.. smoke rises so the closer you are to the ceiling the sooner you succumb.

There is no reason for yourself, your family or your home to be at risk.. they are proven to save lives..

If you have a landlord, are they supposed to have smoke alarms installed and an up to date fire certificate??

  • In my last place, as I was moving out and had - ahem - permanently switched the wretched over sensitive smoke alarm off with a broom handle, I replaced it with one from Tesco, cost about £2.76 on special, £5 normally. Aldi and the like usually do a pack of 2 for £8 as well. So there's no real excuse.

(new builds have them wired into the house supply, so no problem here)

I don't know tbh.. I need to go check now.. :p
    Fire Alarms

The building regulations require that all properties built after June 1992 must have a mains operated inter-connected smoke alarms fitted on every level of the property.
Older properties do not have to comply but landlords are well advised to provide at least battery operated smoke alarms in the property.
It is important to determine who is responsible for testing and maintaining the smoke alarms - the landlord, agent or tenant. If the agent is to be responsible, this should be noted in the management contract. If the tenant is to be made responsible for this then adequate warnings should be included in the letting agreement or in an additional notice.
Also, documents such as the tenancy agreement, the inventory and the appliance operating instruction and emergency procedures information pack given to tenants, should mention the responsibility of the tenant to test and replace batteries in smoke alarms when fitted.
