postage charge

On 21-Mar-10 at 11:06:51 GMT, seller added the following information:
Please note when leaving feedback about our charges that the postage & packaging also includes : - POSTAGE/PACKAGING costs i.e. printing lables, reseal bags, mailing bags, tape etc + Our time and labour + eBay listing & Final value fees + Paypal fees + NEW HIGHER Royal Mail Prices (not ours) THANKS FOR YOUR KIND UNDERSTANDING!

does the above seem fair that the seller adds pay pal and ebay fees to postage costs

i was charged £4.43 for p+p cost of postage £1.19 plus mail bag ( i worked out as the seller buyes of ebay ) £0.05

after questioning the buyer about the pay pal and ebay final fees he got all defensive , just ripping in to me about the spelling mistakes i had made after explaining i was dislexic and disabled i got the following abusive i quote " listnen you bl***y freak i dont have to explain any thing to you "

ive had meseges from the seller saying im the con man i didnt want to pay yet i paid via pay pal after item ended , he reckons that the few items i have sold make me a business and that i have to decalare my earning to the tax man , all the items are private and not business related as far as im aware i dont have to ,

Technically you are not allowed to add paypal and ebay fees to postage it should just cover what it says postage and packing.

When you see things like that you shouldn't bid. All you can do now is wait for the item and make your opinion known in the DSRs and feedback you leave.

Make sure you put the seller on your blocked bidders list and I suggest you seperate your accounts and have one for buying and one for selling.

It doesn't matter what we think as sellers. It just takes a couple of buyers to leave a 1 or 2 * rating and bang goes their ability to compete like for like on ebay. More than a couple poor stars and they will probably end up suspended anyway. So in my opinion that makes the seller a little naive.

OP, if the figures are as you say then reflect what you feel in the stars, that is what they are there for. You are not being asked whether you saw the postage charge before you bid, the stars are for your personal opinion on how you rate that particular seller. No one else here cna tell you how to rate that seller, some posters have suggested they would still leave a 5*, I personally would leave no higher than a 3*, but it is actually up to you.

I would also strongly suggest that the sellers email be forwarded to ebay as it surely cannot be acceptable to anyone to receive a mail like that.

  • Some people really have no clue on how to treat paying customers.
I really hope he's not a business seller (well if he is he won't last long anyway).
If someone states silly terms outside ebay policies they only have themselves to blame if the get hassle from buyers.

OP there is no point in getting all worked up about the postage now, if you don't agree with silly t&c then you should not buy, or buy and then use fb and stars to express your opinion.
If a seller puts those kind of t&c it's obvious that they don't understand how ebay works, and may not like someone pointing that out to them.
Anyway if they didn't put all those costs on the postage bit they would have put it in the item price, and charged more because of additional ebay fees.
It all comes out of the buyer's pockets, whatever you want to call it...

However he was very nasty, that's a different matter, and I agree you should report him to ebay. People like that should have their accounts closed, calling you discriminatory names because of your disability is not acceptable!

I charge £30/hr. It takes me an hour to go to the post office whether I'm taking one item or ten.. Ebay allows the seller to add on a reasonable amount to cover time and expense such as travelling to post office and I typically add about £1-£3 depending on what it is to cover some of the cost. It only costs the price of the stamp and the packing if your time is worthless.

It was clearly stated in the auction so if you don't like it, you shouldn't bid on it.

Postage is a sore point with sellers on Ebay. I've had buyers complaining because I've sent something Special Delivery that I charged £1 LESS than it cost me. In some categories, such as DVDs, Ebay stated postage had to be free. End result, people stopped listing or upped the BIN more than the post was. In other categories they capped the amount. Problem is that they want you to send it recorded and the cap was £1 less than the cost of 1st Class Recorded and a 30p Jiffy envelope. Again, people stopped selling and put BIN prices up so they relented a little.

Could you please provide a link to these policies, as I've often read that you can't do that, so it would be useful to know what you can actually include.

See Postage and related charges section here for what you can charge:

    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/selling-practices.html

It seems to give Business Sellers a strong warning it is illegal to mislead buyers about the way the price is calculated.

To me the ebay policy is not 100% clear one way or the other. Also sellers often list items in the wrong category to get around postage limits imposed by ebay on some items and may be breaking more rules in this area.

However to be honest the postage charge seems a trivial matter compared to abusing a disabled person and making implied and false threats about tax man. If it was me I would phone Ebay for advise on this matter and forget the postage.

Whether the seller is or is not allowed to charge extra postage the buyer is always allowed and is encouraged to ask the seller questions on ebay. The buyer did nothing wrong in asking - this is how ebay works. Sellers who do not like questions are selling in the wrong place.

Abusing a disabled person is no worse than abusing an able person. Both are equally unacceptable.
The word used is not foul language.
    Dyslexia? I'm not convinced.
Pay for the stuff and vent your feelings in the feedback process.
