  • Yes, this sounds a little awkward, but then it also sounds like she wanted you to have it. I think it also sounds like she wanted you to buy something each. Could you both buy new wellies, or something for yourselves.

    I also like the idea of taking her out for tea and cake, but maybe you should buy her a little something just now. I like the plant idea. What about a ponsettia or something christmassy, or maybe a gardening book? I thing older people do like to hear what you spent the money on, so do tell her something, even if it is a little bit made up. White lies...

    I have an elderly friend who I take shopping to doctors appointments etc, not for payment but because I'm very fond of her. From time to time she gives me £20 'petrol' money, I've told her she doesn't need to do it but my thinking is that if it makes her happy then I go along with it. If it gives your neighbour and my friend a sense of dignity and not to feel they are sponging off others then it would be an insult to them not to accept the gift.

    Could you use the £20 to buy her a hamper or something so she has supplies over the festive period? That way you're giving it back and helping her out and she's be none the wiser?
