my 8 yr came in the other day and said she can she have a phone, simple answer no, my friends have one, well answer is still no, if your friends parents have no sense then I cant help that but you are still not getting a phone.

For me there are a few issues here, firstly the health ones, secondly the costs, thirdly she doesnt need to call anyone, she sees her friends at school, she is with us when she is out and I could go on.....

John Bishop has a joke about this, at that age they have nothing to talk about any way so please dont give a 7 year old a phone it really isnt a good thing to do.

Thank you for all your comments and parental advice. Im sorry but Im not going to get into when he will have it etc, what I asked was if anyone had any experience of the phone (thank you Sublime). I trust all of you who commented on whether he should have the phone or not all have experience of having a 7 year old at home with you recent years, Im a great believer in never judging till you have walked 1000 footsteps in that persons shoes. :-)

Oh yes, I have an 8 year old and twins who will be 7 in the spring, so more experience there than you might think.

The word that needs learning is 'no' I'm afraid.

If you want him to have a camera/games get him a DSi. At least nintendo's games are child orientated!

ETA I did say to avoid LG! Friend had the cookie and hated it for the time it worked. Which was brief.

I suppose it really depends on why the child 'needs' a phone, if its just because everyone else has one then maybe not but I don't think age necessarily always comes into it - I had my first mobile at the age of 12 which I only got because I started going to a different school quite a lot further away and my dad would be coming home from work at roughly the same time (not close enough to pick me up as he didn't drive) so he wanted me to phone him everyday to make sure I was ok walking home.

Personally I dont think much of LG - I had the somewhat expensive Renior and it was a piece of rubbish, it literally fell a foot or so out of my hand and onto the carpet and the screen smashed...

  • My five year old niece has a PSP and a personal DVD player amongst other things. It is only a matter of time before her parents get her a Blackberry (because mummy has one). I thought I was spoilt when I was growing up but things like this are just crazy. A mobile for a seven year old? Have a word with yourself!

Anyone can buy what they want for their children.

I also think 7 is too young for a phone but that is my opinion.

If it's games and a camera he needs get him a psp or Nintendo DSI as others have stated. Just because friends have one doesnt mean that he has to have one and explaining that will see him realise that you dont have to 'keep up with the Jones'

Bullying can also occur and having the phone taken from him.

My son got a phone (a cheap one) when he went to High School, it is used only if he needs to speak or text me or his dad.

My daughter who is 10 wants a Laptop for Christmas but she wont be getting one and she has taken this onboard and understands our reasons. Her friends have one but she doesnt need one as we have a perfectly good serviceable computer in the study where we can see what she is doing at all times.

I hope you can suggest other things to him as children these days are growing up too fast and think they 'need' things just because their friends have something when infact they actually dont.
