Can someone explain what (Million+) and (1994 Group) mean?

1994 is very much like the Russell Group. It's about 20? unis all producing a good volume of research but probably less than Russell group unis.

Million+ means they're new unis. Basically another name for any ex-poly/college that's now a university.

I thought 1994 were a group of universities that are recognised for the excellence of their teaching, as opposed to the excellence of research which is the criterion for Russell Group status.

    the power of google

    http://www.russellgroup.ac.uk/about-russell-group/

(although i don't think it can easily be split on teaching versus research. there are plenty of unis in the 1994 group that are nominally 'better' than some on the russell group list - 1994 groups unis tend to be a little smaller and as an average, russell group unis sit slightly higher in league tables. that doesn't mean that it makes a huge difference for individual unis though)

There's also a group called University Alliance comprised of "23 major, business-focussed universities":

You're absolutely right, I oversimplified it.

Ha, just watched Masterchef tonight - one of their tasks was to cook for the academics at Oxford University. Harry Potter, eat your heart out!! Apparently they do the "fine dining" thing at Oxford 6 days a week and they like the food to be impressive (so that they can wow any guests). Consequently there were 165 mouths to stuff with fancy food cordon bleu style!

Didn't the government feel that Oxford had no need to charge max fees? Well, I suppose things like this explain their decision. We can't have those brainy boffins eating common food...or any less than three courses can we? They have high standards of living to maintain...

i'm not sure i'd take masterchef as a documentary on how oxford spends money (not that i actually know!).

if it helps, oxford junior fellows get paid about £17K (this is after a PhD), whereas anywhere else in the country you'd get at least £10K more as a salary. they get staff in cheap because of the reputation. they are fairly thrifty with salarys compared to other institutions! i don't think they are as wasteful as you're suggesting (i'm sure they were many moons ago and perhaps some colleges with massive endowments still are, but times have changed!).

i take that back, they want people with phds to work for under £15K (albeit with 'free' accommodation - i.e. effectively being a warden in a halls of residence!)
