Scotland have the National Entitlement Card, criteria is the same everywhere in the country and can be found on the information page on the application form. I got mine from my local library.

To get a companion the person must be registered blind or have middle or high rate care DLA.

They tightened up the C+ criteria a few months ago, changed the info on the form at the same time. Previously more people could get a C+ though they will still consider you for it if you send in a doctors letter stating why you need a companion when you travel.

wrong, the C+ allows a carer to travel free but it certainly dosnt mean that you MUST have a carer with you, I have traveled alone without any problem at all and it certainly didnt mention anything like that in the leaflet that came with my C+ card.

Not "wrong" in Southampton !! After the event on the bus I checked Southampton council website and it is correct that anyone with a Carer on their buspass will not be allowed on without one - the OP should check in case this is the rule where she lives. It seems every local authority can have their own rules !
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)
  • I have a disabled bus pass on grounds of mental illness. When I first got higher rate disability living allowance about 7 years ago I was told I was entitled and that I had to get my psychiatrist to sign the form and send it to the local travel company. This was renewed every 2 years without difficulty until last year when the travel company initially turned me down and then after 4 months of letters from my psychiatrist saying that in his opinion I would be refused a driving licence they did grant me a new bus pass. The psychiatrist told me that almost everyone he had signed for who had previously had the bus passes had been turned down.
So, going by my experience the form must be signed by a psychiatrist and the key issue is whether you would be refused a driving licence, and even then, if there are cuts happening, you still might be turned down.

Thats illegal and anyone who has had this discrimination should do something about it, I would if anyone tried to force me to have a carer with me, one is with me 90% of the time because I cant manage alone but I would never be forced to be baby sat to use a bus.
  • despite having a letter from my doctor stating that my mental health problems affected my ability to drive safely, i was turned down a bus pass as my council stated that i needed to be on anti-psychotic drugs.............

What about when you are issued with drugs such as Morphine etc and it is made absolutely clear that it is illegal to drive whilst taking them?

I gave up driving a few years back because of this.

I am over 60 now, but still don't have a bus pass as I personally do not agree with them.
But if I was to drive again, and found to be under the influence (which I would be) - they would take my licence away.

In addition I take 40mgs Citalopram. Once again the warning given for this drug is that I must not operate machinery or drive.

So the effects of everyday drugs mean that you cannot/must not drive.
Does this give the right for others to claim a bus pass?

Also because of not being able to drive because of these drugs + LRM-DLA would I be entitled to a BB? Can't see that I should be, because the main criteria is either HRM and/or unable to walk (no legs).

you can get a blue badge without a dla claim. It is up to Local Authority's social services department. Your gp has a part to fill in on the form and often its their comments that make or break the application.

Not being able to drive isn't one of the criteria for a BB. LRM doesn't qualify you either. I went to apply for one (I can see about 5m on a good day) and one of the criteria was the mobility component. It never said anywhere on the form that you had to be on higher.

No, the rules for getting a freedom pass/concessionary bus pass generally exclude driving impairment due to drugs/alcohol.
