Proud to be dealing with my debts

It feels like a day but in fact its four years
Four years oh dear of stressing and tears
Today I’m happy as I am debt free
Its all because I used payplans DMP
:T
Yeahhhhhh I am here posting on the Honour Roll, I used to eye it jealously in 2007 when I had that massive debt and think that one day I would be there.
My final payment went from payplan to my final creditor on the 7th I have been ringing them daily to hear them say that my balance is zero and today it is. Now I set up a standing order to my savings account and look forward to watching that rise.
a. The date of your lightbulb moment – January 2007
b. Debts at their highest - £27,896.00
c. Debt-Free Date 12th October 2011
d. Your 55 pearls of wisdom
- To clear my debts I did a DMP with Payplan.
- Whilst some people find them useful, I found cash back websites and bingo and all of that time wasting. Instead I concentrated on my job and education. I worked hard and with each promotion I was able to earn more money to pay off the debts. I am earning at least £10k more than I was in 2007.
- I made sure I had money for myself and enjoyed life and spending time with friends and family.
- I did not keep a diary because I found that when you are in the debt moment all you are thinking about is debt and its easy to get into depression. I decided to let the debts take care of themselves and I would take care of myself, that includes health, eating properly, regular exercise state of mind and positivity. WHOOP WHOOP
In Jan 2007 I had a debt of £27,896.00 :eek:In October 2011 I paid it off and owned £0.00 - Kinda proud of this!:T0 -

Debt at highest - £30k

Just a few pointers which have helped me along the way:-
*Take up a cheap hobby, I ran helped with stress levels and was totally free
*Meal plan & freeze food
*Be honest with friends about why you can't have evenings out etc, true friends will understand
*Be totally honest with family, they will understand why you can't buy birthday/x-mas gifts, this was the first year in many that my husband & myself gave each other a present
* If you can, negotiate better pay with employers, take on extra work/courses etc.. I'm now earning more than I was before I had my daughter doing less hours because I've put the work in.
* Don't think having a debt means you can't have a family, we have a two year old and she is a total e-bay baby, I went back to work after a few months but we made it work
* Keep coming on this forum
* Don't pay full price for anything if you really don't need it
GOOD LUCK GUYS XReceived £2,626.00 in PPI -2013:j

Love it Nancmat...you give me hope.
LL xx£38,000 and change to £00 -
The date of my lightbulb moment – Circa 2006
Debts at their highest - Exact amount unknown but likely over £100,000 _pale_
Debt-Free Date - 17th October 2011
My pearl of wisdom - Keep an up-to-date record of EVERYTHING you owe. I used a spreadsheet and kept it up to date, even when the debt increased (I will admit to the odd relapse along the way). It did help me to see where I was, especially after spending so many years ignoring how much trouble I was getting myself into.
I'll admit that I have been very fortunate in the fact that my parents did have money (some of which I have now inherited) and probably accounts for the somewhat cavalier attitude I had to money in my earlier years. I was always too ashamed to tell them I was in a mess and I didn't directly ask them for any money (although the small gifts of money on my birthday and at Christmas were greatly appreciated). It is a minor miracle that I didn't go under. But I am glad about the fact that I have now repaid all my debts without going down the route of an IVA or bankruptcy.
I must confess to now feeling a little strange. I have awaited this day for years and it is going to odd NOT seeing most of my salary scatter to the four winds on the 1st of the month (like cockroaches when you turn on the light). Looking around my flat over the weekend, it struck me that 'all this c**p is now actually mine - all paid for'. All the times I've wished I could convert it all back to cash to reduce the debt mountain. Now anything I sell, the money's mine...to spent on other c**p, no doubt.
Older?....definitely!
Wiser?....maybe a little
