  • Wow, Lenny, what an inspiration to people just starting out here! I can't imagine what an amazing feeling it must be - and also to know that as a result of what you've been through, you'll never look at money the same way again. Here's to the rest of your (debt-free) life!!

Congratulations to all of you. I’m also debt free, only came here to check out bargains and to see if I was missing anything. Words of wisdom: I hated being in debt from the start but at times it was necessary. A good attitude is important so is refusing to let the debt get on top of you, stay on top of it. Don’t hide debt letters away in a drawer, stick them up on the fridge and vow to see an end to it before such and such a date.

Congratulations once again. Can you feel the freedom?!!!

Your one perl of wisdom Let people (family and friends) know that you are in debt, don't try to hide it from them, it brings down an unnecessary weight on one's shoulders.

Well that's it, I'm there, over the line, 48K gone! Its been hard, I shiver at the physical and mental effects that I have been through over the last few years, I am scarred for life and for once in a long long long time I am finally debt free. Thank you too all my friends that I made during the early days on DFW, they really were absolute gems and I would not be where I am today without you; I truly will be forever grateful. Thank you everyone, thank you Martin and thank you DFW

    Well Done Lenny!

Pearl of wisdom: Really think about what has got you into debt, for me it was trying to keep up with my friends who were all in different finacial situations than me. I did try and keep it a secret at first because I was a bit ashamed but it was too difficult to keep saying no to things and so I told a few close friends but the more people I told the more I realised that a lot of my friends were in the same position as me and we ended up having lots of cheap days out together which was good for us all.
I am now really excited to start overpaying the mortgage although I may leave it for a couple of months as I would really like to save up for christmas which will be a whole new experience for me.

    Total Debt: [STRIKE]£24,359.79[/STRIKE] £16,452

Lightbulb moment: 28/07/2010 when we decided that we were better off taking out a personal loan than mortgage on our flat. Although it was higher interest but allowed us more flexibility to overpay monthly.

    Debts at highest: £30.000

    Debt-Free Date: 6th October 2011

Pearl of wisdom: Lots really: shop around, make shopping lists and stick to them, grab the opportunities to do overtime even if you are dead tired. We earned appr. £5000 net extra in one year just by doing babysittings and overtime whenever we could, all went towards the loan. As soon as your salary is in, budget for everything and pay the rest towards the loan, therefore you won't spend it. And reward yourself time to time, we went on budget holidays and had fantastic times!

Pearl of wisdom: Don't allow yourself to take your eye off the ball. It's very easy to think you can relax a bit when you see the numbers falling, but it only adds time to your sentence in the long run.
Nothing feels as good as making that final payment! :j
