Bluddy hell I never thought I'd be here. I had my lightbulb moment in Oct 2006, after taking my first job post professional qualification and realising my wage wasn't even enough to cover my everyday bills and petrol to work.
I left another tearful meeting with the bank, head spinning and thought, I can't keep going like this.
I discovered MSE when searching for info on how to reclaim bank charges, and the rest as they say..
In total I've paid off just under £10k, though at its highest my debt was about £7k - things got taken off and added on
I always said I wanted to be DF before my 30th birthday, and indeed I am, 11 days before, on Sep 15, 2008.
My one pearl of wisdom is to get a second job, if at all possible.
I realise this isn't possible for everyone, but for me, it made the difference between sink and swim.DEBT FREE! Sep '08/£9,800 in Oct '06 :beer:0 -
Yay feels so glad to post here (although i am so proud i am posting everywhere :rotfl:)
I had my light bulb moment in April 2007 when i joined this site, my debts were then approx £5300 as i took out a loan to clear all my other debts, but i did get another credit card and spent on it so over the last 17 months i have cleared about £7k of debt all by myself
And as of today i am debt free and proud.
My words of wisdom is to keep going at it and imagine the things you can achieve/buy once its all gone, my main goal is to own my own home and start a family plus have a few nice holidays before and its kept me going. Now a SAHM trying to earn some spare pennies each month0 -
DF today - just paid off stupid halifax!!!!!!!!!!
LBM was 15/1/08
debts at highest were £5580
DFD is today 25/9/08
now i just gotta not get in any more debt!!!!!!)

Wow, I finally made it, here I am on the roll of honour, 26 September 2008 is my debt free date, thanks so much to everyone!
Mine's not a very straightforward debt-free journey. My debt at highest was a few quid under £100k (including mortgage) 3 years ago when I became a single mum. I struggled until I lost the house and ran away from the rest of the debt. It was only in May this year that I decided, with the support of this site, to face up to the remainder of the debt. I am so glad that I did.
I have reclaimed all unfair charges using the templates and forum support which obviously cut a big chunk into it, I have drastically cut back on things I thought I was already spending minimum on which I will stick with forever and I have laughed more than I have in years!Debt busting! Pearl of wisdom (wisdom..me?..dont think so..) - Get a real idea of what money is worth, a fiver used to be 'just a fiver' now its a lot of money! Join quidco, survey sites, bingo site scratchcards and anything else you can find for that few extra quid-it all mounts up....er-thats all folks :-)0 -
LBM July 2007 (after my car accident, I decided to get my life in order)
Debts at highest 18,511 (including Student loan, £7,511 without it)
Debt free date 3rd October 2008 (everything but the student loan)
Pearls of wisdom
1 Real friends won't mind if you have the jacket potato while they have the steak:D
2 Be organised, check your online bank balance frequently and make a spending diary
3 The people on this website know what they're talking about!
4 If you see something you like in a shop...walk away. If you're still thinking about the item a week later, go back to the shop. If it's sold out, it just wasn't meant to be.
5 Even the longest journey starts with a single step...Please continue to hold the line. Your call is very important to us and will be answered by next available robot...0
