Yeh. Done it and currently enjoying a three week holiday in Thailand to celebrate.

    a. The date you decided to become debt-free
    April 2013.

    b. Debts at their highest
£513,200 on mortgage and £58,000 on credit cards / unsecured loans.
    c. Debt Free Date
    18 November 2016

    d. Your one perl of wisdom.
Sacrifice all comforts to ruthlessly pursue debt clearance from the best income you can secure.

I read all the guides on MSE and elsewhere, followed the plan to cut biggest debts quickly, but I didn't use the diary.

I was fortunate in that I had a big, but unusual and hard to sell, house and was ultimately able to downsize to a rather nice 4 bed executive property that my wife and I own outright.

For over a year I was at considerable risk of losing that house through repossession though. It has been a tough few years starting with redundancy.

Technically, I still have some debt but that is all on zero rate cards and I have the money in secure savings to pay them off in full when the zero rate ends.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but ignorance is lethal.
  • Finally. :j

    1) Lightbulb moment - November 2005

    2) Debts at their highest - £103,500, all in unsecured personal debt (loans, cards and overdrafts)

    3) DFD - 20 December 2016

    4) Pearl of wisdom - budget like mad, focus on the goal, and never, ever give up

More complete story of my journey and a few additional pearls of wisdom in my post here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5575569

Paid off the final £1000 on my loan today. First time in 13 years that I have been totally debt free.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
