  • I became debt free about a year ago.

At the highest we owed about £56000 on cards, loans etc and £60000 on the mortgage. We fell in debt when our daughter became ill when she was 9. She is 30 now.

It all became too much when she was very sick and in hospital. We thought she was going to die. We told all of the creditors that we had this to deal with and not a single one was kind. Individual people we spoke to could be understanding, but none were helpful. I don't think they believed us.

Anyway--Altogether we owed about £116000 and we now are mortgage and debt free. It took about 10 years of hard work but we have got there!

My pearl of wisdom---NEVER TALK TO THE DEBT COMPANIES!!! keep t all in writing and only tell them what you have to. We once told our mortgage company that we would have trouble paying the mortgage for a few months and that was just giving them advanced warning.

If I am allowed a second pearl it is ---keep reading mse. The advice and help is amazing and I wish I had found it in my worst days.
    Thanks for all the help.

I've been debt free for almost a year and thought it was time that I stopped being a DFW.
    1. The date of your lightbulb moment: September 2008
    2. Debts at their highest: £27,681
    3. Debt-Free Date: November 2014
    4. Your one perl of wisdom: As soon as you have that skinning feeling, pick up the phone and talk to a free debt adviser be it someone at Citizens Advice, Step Change (formally CCCS), PayPlan etc. Your debt can be managed and there is a light at the end of that dark tunnel. I wish that I had taken this advise and maybe, my debts wouldn't have got as big and would have been dealt with sooner.
