Thanks for your advice phonix, but it's not about the subject
I think it will be cheaper to use 18866 for my phone calls than dig up the roads for 5 km or more thank you
but yes if I get broadband I'll have SIP; already got the phone number and asked if I can divert it when not available - not sipgate0 -
It's a little related to the subject because presumably you're all looking for the cheapest way of connecting to the internet.
What sort of number do you have? The great thing about the sipgate service is they offer a free UK geographical number. Great for recieving calls from 1899 and 18866 users. As you know they pay just 1p/call to ring uk geographical numbers.I think it will be cheaper to use 18866 for my phone calls than dig up the roads for 5 km or more thank you
The post is only for cable users, if you're not in a cable area then you have no choice but to keep your phoneline. However it's definately the cheapest way for people in cable areas to get online, and make and recieve phonecalls0 -
You've discussed the relative merits of Skype and SIP elsewhere and I think I've agreed with you; SIP will be the future of landline phones.
But to suggest cable to people who already have it is patronising; to those who don't pointless. You're talking of getting cheap phone calls via the internet. This thread is the obverse; getting cheap internet via phonecalls0 -
I typed last reply without seeing your edit.
I'm hoping to put SIP in a wi-fi PDA and be rung from home on sipgate number while abroad for 1p. On the other hand 1899 is beta-trialling voip, so I might need their account to ring home for 3p.0 -
I just think they should be aware of the other possibilities and these sort of people are clearly those who're willing to go to a great deal of effort to get the cheapest connection.
Addmittedly using 18866/1899 and your phoneline to go online is only marginally cheaper than using cable and a VoIP solution. However cable is alot faster and lacks the uncertainty associated with these geograhical ISP numbers which sometimes change.I'm hoping to put SIP in a wi-fi PDA and be rung from home on sipgate number while abroad for 1p. On the other hand 1899 is beta-trialling voip, so I might need their account to ring home for 3p.
lol not a bad idea.
Have a look around the SIPphone forums I'm sure I saw a thread about PDA and sipphone software sometime ago.0 -
I've been using NOCHARGE for sometime now with 1899 with no problem whatsoever. it is true that you get odd noises and sounds when the PC is dialling (not like the usual modem noise) but leave it to dial and it will eventually connect to the American ISP with no problems. 1899 is only charging me the usual connection fee as advertised. Basically dial-up internet connection for 3P at time.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0

andy have a look at http://sjlabs.com/To speak via SJphone, your need:
A personal computer with MS Windows XP, 2000, 98/ME, Linux or MAC OS X,
or a PDA with the xScale or StrongArm CPU running under PocketPC2002/2003
a USB phone, or a headset, or a microphone with speakers with a full-duplex sound driver.
a broadband Internet connection, although it works on dial-up lines with an appropriate codec. DSL is a good choice.
an account with any Internet Telephony Service Provider for more than just direct calls. You may download a customized version of SJphone from the ITSP, or simply add an ITSP service profile by installing the ITSP service profile from this site
Lastly I just want to add that the cheap cable and internet phone solution is sustainable. Surely the 1899/18866 thing can't be sustainable if more and more people start going online in this way. besides this I don't like the whole "let's not tell anyone" syndrome that's been associated with this method in the past, so muchso people have posted against Martin making a guide on it.0 -
This is going really off topic now, but regarding wi-fi, do you know of any free grids in Europe. Any wi-fi schemes going?0
