yes clara.net i have had an account with them for a couple of years they had a payg service, which i cant find on the site, or maybe i didnt look hard enough, well after u signup call them up and ask them for their london number and they will give it 2 u :)
  • I don't think clara offer dial-up pay as you go anymore. I've searched long and hard and can't find it.

I've also tried all the '0870' alternatives from https://www.saynoto0870.com and all of them give a busy signal when you use 18866 or 1899 but if I dial them normally through BT then they dial. I think these companies have thought of this idea and stopped them.

I've also tried using the american nocharge.com and it won't connect (it does dial and 1899 tells me it's going to be free (3p connection))... it just make funny noises...

Has anyone got a company that this works with???

    Thanks

    Simon

Same here ! The lucky ones are those with old dial-up PAYG accounts. I haven't been able to connect with anything using 18866.
    "0844 COSTS YOU MORE"
  • I thought this would be simple for you guys, when i get home, i'll sign up with 18866 and try it out.

There nothing called old pay as you go accounts, their still being used alot and a live today, and you don't have to sign up!

Go through this site, look for the best comments, and find a pay as you go one that you don't have to sign up with.

    http://www.ispreview.co.uk/0845list/0845.shtml

As it says on the site you don't have to sign up for these ones, jsut put in the number, password, and username the service says.

    Site extract:
    "
Almost all ISPs listed are still online, although with so many we can never be sure

These ISPs are ALL LCR (Local Call Rate) 0845 Offerings.

None of them require any kind of monthly or other payment outside of BTs own call charges
    "

Just keep going through these service before one works. (remember look at the comments)

But i got a question now, cause i'm not with 18866 yet, can you check you statement online, or only when they send it by e-mail?
  • maneesh, what is needed is a "normal" phone number to dial up to - nearly all the dial up ISP's use 0845 numbers - no good for 18866.
  • Ahh nuts, so is there any at all that do that type of number?
  • Has anyone had any luck at all with this, and if so, with what number or isp?

What is the point of publishing it here, so that people can then correspond with 18866 and/or their ISP resulting in it being blocked?

... it seems 18866 is not working at the moment anyway

I've said this many times before but,

The cheapest way to get online is available if you're in a cable area.

    Why is this?

because if you get cable you can dial all of your calls using VoIP and recieve all of your calls to a UK geographical number (cheap for those calling) using VoIP.

You can even buy a SIP phone, connect and configure it to your router.

The point being, if you use cable, make and recieve all your calls using VOIP, you no longer have to pay BT line rental hence you make a saving of £10.50/month.

Besides this you end up with a faster and possibly more stable internet connection for only a little more than you were paying BT for a standard phoneline.

Lastly if you do decide to get an IP phone, try to get a SIP phone as it will work with any SIP provider. So for example if you buy a SIPphone from Sipgate and you don't like their service you can always switch to another provider and reconfigure the phone and your router. Contrast this with Skype, a closed protocol, meaning if you buy a phone for skype you will only be able to use it to recieve incoming Skype calls. Only Skype has the rights to use the Skype protocol, they have a copyright, so you're locking yourself in.
