Fake signature on proof of delivery, no parcel and £300 out of pocket - please help

I have a massive problem and am not sure what to do here.
I ordered an item on ebay in November costing £300, it should have been here by now so I contacted the seller and asked where it was. The seller came straight back to me with a electronic copy of the proof of delivery signature slip from UK mail saying the item was delivered on the 17th November and signed for with my surname.
The worrying thing is I was out all day then and the signature on the proof of delivery is not mine, although it is my surname! I have told the seller this but as he has a proof of delivery he doesn’t want to get involved and feels that he have done his part.
I called UK mail and the call centre claim they spoke to the driver today and the driver said he can remember a male answering the door and that he went to the right address (very good memory for 21 days ago)
I asked UK mail for a head office or complaints number or for a description of the person who signed for it seeing as the driver has such a good memory and they haven’t come back to me yet.
What can I do here and where do I stand, surely signing my name is illegal, when I checked with my neighbors to see if they had it by mistake one of my neighbors recalls seeing a parcel left outside my door a few weeks ago – however I haven’t come home to any parcel left on my door recently.
Thanks for any help in advance, I have opened a ebay dispute

It is unlikely you will win a paypal claim as this sounds like the courier company had done something a little strange. The fact that the signature shows your surname *might* just suggest that someone unknown signed for a parcel just using the signature on the address label.
You may need to work with the seller to persue the courier company on this.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Unfortunately the seller has done everything expected of them by paypal and should have full seller protection.
You may need to make a formal complaint to the courier company and even consider legal actionI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I am in the a similar postion, as i purchased an item off ebay and contacted the seller to ask where it was and they came back with a deliverly note with a barcode and a forged signiture with isnt mine or anyone else who lived with me.
I contacted the seller to tell them and said they have spoken to Royal Mail and that it had been delivered, i opened a ebay dispute, which then the seller started accusing me of receiving the parcel and then saying i got my brother to sign for it for me as we have the same initials. I replyed back as my brother is not currently living in my household.
I have contacted Royal Mail and they say it has been delivered and that i cant claim it as a lost item. They advised me to fill in a P58 but i doubt i will get my money back as they cant on jewellery and that the seller didnt insure it.
Should i close the ebay dispute as i doubt that i would win due to the seller having the proof of delivery but in fact i never recieved?
Unsure what to do0 -

the seller will not win a claim with that
it shows as no delivery attempt has been madeItem AH408876545GB was posted at 118 Kingsley Roa ME15 7UL on 17/11/10 and is being progressed through our network for delivery.0 -
Some delivery drivers go to the door and say "Parcel for Mr XXXX" and then hand you a pad to sign. Obviously an honest person would say "No. Wrong address" but some people may create a fake signature and claim the package.0
