  • Well, it's been rather a long time since last I set my goals and targets down here, but I've been able to pop my total up into 4 figures, which considering we're well into October suggests I may need to step up my workrate.

Everything I've added has come through freelance article writing, as I haven't calculated or thought about anything else. Started a blog in the hope of getting some residual income coming through from Adsense, but only just started so that's probably more of an earner for 2012 rather than this year.
    DFW - DEBT FREEEEEE!

    Total - 10762/10762 :)

Hi everyone! I'm MSE'ing mucho's this week as the parents are on holiday and I've just been on holiday so have no money to go and buy food. I managed to get some cheapo veggies last night but was wondering if anyone could help me in regards to slow cooking in a slow cooker. If anyone could help I would be very grateful.

The first dish I'm cooking is an Irish Stew (although I'm substituting the dumplings for mashed potato which I will cook separately). For this I've got some sort of steak out of the freezer (there were 2 in a pack so I separated them and left one in the freezer, and I took one out last night to put in the fridge to defrost). The second dish is a chicken curry, and the third dish is supposed to be beef in a red wine casserole type thing, but I'm not sure what the meat is, all I know is it's a steak.

    So, my questions.

    1. As I get up early, I don't want to be cooking on the morning, so the night before, what do I do? Am I supposed to seal the meat/brown it off in a saucepan (and onions for that matter - and the ginger/garlic/garamasala/spices for the curry?)

    2. If I'm supposed to brown it off/cook the onions/spices, then is it okay to do this the night before I want to eat it?

    3. I would be a little worried about browning it off and leaving the meat in the stock/gravy/juices at room temperature, but if I put the stuff in a dish in the fridge, surely it won't heat up very well in the slow cooker?

    4. If I do brown the meat the night before could I put the slow cooker on after I've sealed the meat (on number 1) and then when I get up in the morning turn it up to number 2, so that it cooks whilst I'm at work? I am thinking this is the best option if I have to seal the meat, but I'm not too sure if this would over cook it.

    5. If I do have to seal the meat, on the red wine dish am I supposed to add the red wine whilst sealing the meat or is it okay to just add it to the slow cooker when I put everything in? I heard something about you're supposed to cook the alcohol off, so I'm not too sure what to do.

    Thank you

hi fred sorry dont have a slow cooker ev1 on the frugal board uses them you might get a better answer there .think it will heat up ok if you brown the night before as a lot of stuff goes straight from fridge into slow cooker you can always zap it in the micro if you are not sure if its hot all the w\y through
