    morning all

today i am going to start the challenge by doing a budget and opening piggy bank accounts

my ds plays golf so i am along side this setting aside a detailed budget, well that is the plan! so that i can effectively cross of spends with my profits as that is mainly what the money is going to be for

last year i let the challenge slip as i just let the money dribble into my own money so to speak so this year one of my biggest aims is to keep everything in order and assign chunks of money to various things as i wont be able to reinvest all the money into making more at least i can justify where i have spent it

off to do a budget and open accounts and will see if i can find any cutbacks there

mobile phones is the first thing i will be looking at, as just changed gas and electric supplier etc

    catch you all later

Morning everyone :D All the plans are sounding great! There's a really good buzz throughout this thread when you read it back. It's moving at quite a pace already too!

I've just been reflecting on some of the things I did this year - the main thing for me was taking in students. We hosted 3 a week for several weeks over the summer (& other weeks just 1 or 2) and earned just over £100 per student per week. The money went straight into the joint account and so I have no idea of the total but probably about 1.5k over the whole season. Another thing I did was task a tax rebate company to ascertain whether i had any tax owing to me - and this generated another £160 (the company takes 40% which is a fair whack but i wouldn't have done it without them so it would've been lost money).

There was a period of time where i was really careful about what we were spending and recording it all on a daily basis - that worked really well as we saved a fortune, especially on food shopping. Being focused and not deviating from a shopping list really worked. I'll return to that this next year. I can't think of anything else I did personally, although i did gain some ideas for future projects. Oh and i set up a couple of websites with a friend but they only earn a small trickle but have been fun to do...and i purchased a load of googly eyes...and I joined in a spell of fly-ladying, which was great for the house for a short time! I really need more staying power.

Only a little of my earnings are left in my savings account, but i have bought a small boat with a little engine that has been great fun. I've also had a holiday and another one booked, none of which would've happened without this challenge.

The main gain from this last year's challenge, for me, has been friendship. It's a cliche but we have certainly been through a journey and there's been laughter, tears, frustrations, hilarity... The support offered by the other dribblers has been absolutely 2nd to none :T (I actually feel quite tearful!) :o

So all the best to everyone! You've found the right place - here's to some great successes, whatever your individual goals

  • Count me in! Not sure I'll make anywhere near £11k, but every little helps as a student.

  • Wilff r you on mumsnet????
  • Well good evening everyone. Ive discovered that if i want to take oh on a fab holiday for his 30th in 2013 i need to save approx £125 a month startin jan 2011. Now bearing in mind ive also got a wedding to plan & around £6k of credit card debt id like to pay off , then id need to make at least £11k lol!! Ive taken some ebay pics in preparation for listing in jan - ideally i need to sell at least 10 items a month!

The key to this challenge for me is the support on here :-) i just need to stay motivated!

Finally can anyone recommend a decent laptop? I have a lot of pics & music but other than that it will be used for mse, emails, ebay & any surveys worth doin!! x

I bought a HP G62 last week, for £399 from Currys. So far, it's proving more reliable than my previous Sony Vaio. HTH

  • I'm in but unless I change jobs with a bonus structure I'm aiming for a much more modest £1,100 - £20 a week.

Can I ask a few questions? I did a similar challenge this year so am looking for one for this year too.

Does it have to be £11,000 or can we set our own target?

Do we get issued 'member' numbers and is it all summarised by someone or is it just a case of edit your siggy and a bit more relaxed?

Going to think about my strategy and then I'll be back with a commitment. :j

    Hi Boomdocker - Welcome! :D

Although the target is 11k and a lot of us like to aim high and believe we can make it happen, the challenge is open to anyone with any target really - see 'mynameisdave' above. For many (myself included) 11k is perhaps rather unrealistic - but i like to aim for it and then end up closer to 11k than if i aimed for a much lower amount. There are no rules though, whatever works for you :)

Last year we started with numbers but didn't really use them - most people tracked their own progress, either in their signature or on private spreadsheets - again whatever works for the individual.

Looking forward to reading your strategy, glad you're joining us :T
