Ladies who are going back to work, you don't HAVE to stop Bfing OR supplement with formula if you don;t want to, you can either express milk, or just feed them in the evening and morning; babies who have started solids will adapt and be able to go all day without milk, having water instead.

Just thought I'd say that as the OP and another poster have both said they will 'have to' use formula, which implies they might not want to.
I'd be suprised if a six month old baby could go a full working day with no milk though - mine was still fully breastfed.

Hmm. I spent hours comparing the ingredients in Aptamil and C&G (there's so much stuff in there), glad I wasn't bothered about the other brands. The ingredients were identical, but quantities may vary. I found Aptamil smelt like baby sick already and just prefer C&G (prettier packaging?? with the legalities of it, that's just as good a way to choose as any ). Aptamil contained more AHAs, whatever they may be...

  • Hmmm interesting..... although I probably wouldn't believe a word any formula food company told me, all they're interested in is profit.

Michelle, if you want to continue breastfeeding, your employers have to allow you time during your working day to express.

Thanks for the positive responses. :D I was a bit surprised to hear what she was said too. She was very honest and lovely though.

I work in a school Barbie so im pretty much busy all the time, I know employers are supposed to give you time to express, but that just wont be possible if I have a full teaching day. My dinner is 45 mins (not including 10 mins pack up and prepare time). Even if I could manage during dinner I would get just the one feed. If i was to express at night I would need enough for 2 other feeds which probably wouldnt happen as id be spending all evening hooked up like a cow. :) Im still planning on giving her evening feeds/early morning.

I hate it, I wish I could feed longer but then part of me thinks its going to be great to get DH to feed her so I can have some more free time to do things.

Michelle does say that she plans to carry on feeding at night and in the morning, Skinty.

I did exactly the same thing, although LO was a little older so just had cow's milk and solids during the day then I fed him when I was around. It worked really well for us.

I have no idea on formula- they all smell a bit sicky to me :o!

I'm pro-breastfeeding but everyone has to plan for their own lifestyle and sometimes it just isn't practical to take 45 mins out of your working day to go and express breastmilk whilst sat in a cupboard somewhere, despite what the law allows.

Every day that you breastfeed is a good day for your baby. No matter how much other food or drink he is given, the benefits of a breastfeed even just once a day, are worth the effort. You've done a great job so far, it's fine to use formula alongside breastfeeding, don't feel guilty about it. If you can keep up with the evening feed at least, it will give you both a chance to sit and wind down and you especially, will need that after a day at work! It's not going to hurt if you miss a feed, your milk won't suddenly dry up.

Remember that some babies do react to formula feeds, changing bowel habits and wind problems are common at first. Don't worry, you will both get used to the changes, although you will be surprised at how much work formula feeding can be. Make sure that you have a steam or electric steriliser, and loads of bottles/teats etc.

She's only just turned 6 months and already in the 25th percentile so a bit small for her age. If I didnt give her milk during the day she would starve- literally.

It would be a big PITA... hold on year 7 im just going to express for 45 mins- keep yourselves entertained. It would be interesting to know if any secondary teachers on here have managed it! Id say about 70% of the time you dont even get time for dinner.

Thanks. Im quite lucky as I had to do combined feeding with bottles and breast in the first 6 weeks as she was a mega hungry baby- had a few issues with the taste of formula but after a few feeds from DH she will take the bottle quite happily now.

I've always used the example of coke and pepsi when explaining the difference between formulas. Pretty much the same basic but some people prefer one to the other, but they are about as good (or bad) as each other

:rotfl: I misread that at first and thought you said, "I always used coke or pepsi."

    It's a good explanation though.

I know I already replied to this but I feel I cannot leave such a statement without a more detailed response:

For young babies their most important source of nutrition is milk regardless of whether this is breastmilk or formula. At six months, even if a baby has started weaning "early" milk should be their main source of nutrition and any solids food should be in addition to and not in place of milk. I understand that different people have different circumstances which require them to do things in different ways but to make a six month old baby go for a full working day with only solid food and water and no milk is wrong. If it were better to give a baby solid food than formula then the WHO would be advising people who were formula feeding to wean earlier than those who give breast milk whereas in fact they do not consider the type of milk given to be a factor in determining when to wean.
