Have you tried http://ononemap.com/ ? It can be very useful for working out things like 'an area to buy a 4/5 bed house for 350-400k within X miles of a train station.
From the looks of it, north, west and north west of london are the areas to look at.
Here's an example of a few I found within a few minutes:

Someone mentioned Chafford Hundred, I live there at the moment and property is very affordable, although the houses are very "new build" so it depends if you mind that style. You can get a 5 bed house from £360k here, although as someone pointed out you tend to have limited garden space. However, it is 35 mins from Fenchurch Street/ Tower Hill so very good commuting time. Do a Rightmove search if you are interested, here's a few to give you an idea:

Hhhm it depends also on how much money you are prepared to spend on fares to travel back into London. For example from Reading, which I travel from some of the time, it will cost around about £4,500 per year and if you are aiming to get into London Bridge you may find life easier to come from the East rather than West.
To be honest, I think you may be hard pushed to find somewhere that has main transport links into London in that sort of price range for that budget. You may be able to find a small town or village that doesnt have particularily good links to London, but anywhere around the M25 you wont manage to fit what you want within your budget unless it needs a lot of work.0 -
How's about:

Caterham, Oxted, Edenbridge etc - nice surrey countryside. Main line goes into Victoria but change at East Croyden and there's plenty of services to London Bridge. Do a search on right move for 5 miles of Oxted £425K, 4 bedrooms turns up more than 100 props. Just o/s the M25 but easy access onto it for road travel.
Chips as chips that Surrey place!

Try Middlesex

Harrow & Wealstone Station - 16mins to Euston Station, great links to the city.0 -
Whatever you do dont go anywhere near Chafford Hundred. Its a posh name for Grays and the property value is outrageous for what you get. Crime is also high in the area and the state schools appauling. Lived there, had to get out!
Try North Essex first, far better proporties out towards Colchester in the rural areas.
