Where can I buy a 4/5 bed modern detached house for around £400K adjacent to London

Hi,
I am looking to spend about £400K on a 4/5 bed detached house in a county adjacent to London but am struggling to find areas that are potentially suitable at this budget.
Can anyone provide some suggestions.
The criteria I have is that the house must look nice from the exterior, be modern and be not much further than approx 1 hour commuting distance to London Bridge station.
The sort of style I am after are:

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-8336647.rsp?pa_n=4&tr_t=buy
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-5311497.rsp?pa_n=2&tr_t=buy
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-5768026.rsp?pa_n=2&tr_t=buy
Do any such places exist. If need be I will consider going out further slightly.
Thanks

I live not far south of Birmingham and you'd be on the right side of half a million here. Just about.

Good Luck!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Shenley (south Hertfordshire) has a whole estate built (very nicely) like your pictures. 3 mile drive to Elstree british rail and then 25 minutes Thameslink (now first capital connect) into London.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I don't know the area too well but I think that might be a little ambitious, would you consider 3/4 bed at that price? Where my father lives in Yorkshire for a 5 bed is circa £400K and I'm guessing that Yorkshire is cheaper than the Home Counties, not much help I appreciate.
As they say on the TV programmes what would you compromise on?0 -
...and then the window licker said to me...0

I don't think you would get that sort of house for around £400 k near to London. You have chosen Kent which is quite good value. Havering is cheaper, and Thurrock - Chafford Hundred has many houses 5+ bedrooms for under £400k. Not much land though.
An area in Maidenbower - West Sussex near Crwaley has those type of houses on newish estate - which you would get for that sort of price. The train link from Three Bridges goes straight into London Bridge - about 50 mins
Nice houses - good luck :jStuck on the carousel in Disneyland's Fantasyland

Dare I say it you may have to compromise somewhat, be it spending more or moving further away. My old manager bought a house in leicester & worked in central london and she reported it wasnt half as bad as everyone thouht it was little over an hour for her train journey home. ( although there was tubes and car drive at other end)
I did find this though

Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

I would say one place you can try would be Milton Keynes, as there are always so many new houses being built there, that people selling "used" houses can often not shift them. You would then be able to approach them with lower offers.
Here is an example:

MK may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is close enough to London and houses are cheaper and still all Modern.0 -
Haverhill Essex-Dont know what it's like but you can get a 5 bed modern detatched from £283,000.

Have a look at this Right Move search for Aldershot.
The commute to London is 45 minutes to Waterloo.
Other possible areas (in price order) are Farnborough, Woking, Basingstoke, Fleet, Farnham, Guildford. That's Numberwang!0
