Four year old's hair disaster

My little girl went to play at a friends for the day yesterday. She has (or had) long hair all one length. She was persuaded by friend's older sister to have a makeover. Older sister has chopped my little girl's hair to about three inches long across the front (too short too tie back) and hacked about eight inches off round one side.

I am so gutted. I couldn't look at my little girl last night. I left my OH to take her to the hairdressers today but he didn't because he was afraid I'd get even more upset if he gave the hairdresser the wrong instructions. I've made an appointment for her to go tomorrow night and will leave work early to take her.

Am I being a drama queen? I feel so ill about it. I barely slept last night and felt really ill at work today. I can't believe losing my little girl's hair has made me feel so dreadful. She has only ever had her hair trimmed, it grows really slowly and she is now going to end up with a dodgy bob with a fringe. I just want to cry (and murder the child concerned).

Any ideas at all for how to help matters? I've booked at an expensive hairdressers but don't really see how that can help much. I know much worse things happen in life too but I can't see past how upset I am at the moment.

I think I'd have been more angry than upset, what did the girl's parents say when you went to pick her up???

At least her hair will grow again, be patient!!

Friend dropped her off before I got home from work last night and was very apologetic to OH. Think I would have still reacted especially as hair chopper was seven and so I think old enogh to know better, but OH didn't say anything. Full extent of damage was not apparent until I got home, gasped in horror at the sight, took out the bobble that was still holding some of her hair in a ponytail and a load more fell on the floor as it was no longer attached to her head.

I think I'd be tempted to send the hairdresser's bill to the girl's mum to pay as well as expecting to know what punishment she was going to get.
  • Poor you, I understand where you are coming from, my Mum never let anyone touch the hair on my head (except her) when I was young except for the tiniest of trims! I could sit on my hair. I didn't even have a pair of scissors near me until I was about 6 years old!

I would be extremely upset and annoyed too:mad: Plus I would insist that the other child's parents pay for your daughters proper haircut.

On this occassion money's not really an issue. I'd happily pay ten times the likely hairdresser's bill to restore my daughter's hair. Wish it was that easy!

what i wonder is what was a child doing with a pair of scissors in the first place?!?
i would ask the parents to pay or contribute to the hairdresser costs, surely they should have been supervising the children and stopped it before so much hair was cut off?
but then again hair grows and i could be worse she could have shaved her head!;)
chin up hon when i was a kid i used the be able to sit on my hair and i cut it off myself, my mum nearly killed me, i ended up with a bob as well and it never bothered me at the time. (it does now when i look at the photos  )

I think it would help to remember that your daughter is only 4 years old. I'm not sure it's a good idea at that age to place so much emphasis on how she looks for both you and your daughter. Yes, the older sister of the friend was wrong and scissors should be kept away out of reach. But I think you do need to keep a strong sense of perspective. It's not like she came home with a dreadful injury from the scissors.

  • Oh, no i think that you have every right to be upset.

My dd cut her own hair when she was three, i was so upset BUT a 7 year old should know better and did know better i am sure.

My skid used to cut her own hair, regularly looked like Frankenstein's daughter, she was also 7 - i suspect that your friend is mortified and i suspect that her daughter has been severly told off.

I hope that the hairdresser has managed or will manage to make it look nice. The way our little girls look is important to us and i guess that it will take you a while to feel less upset - maybe though if she has really slow growing hair, a good cut will help to thicken it up and help it to grow a bit faster.

I think that your friend should have been on the phone to YOU by now and apologising though.

If my child did that to anyone at that age i'd have to remove all their priveledges for quite a long time.

Hope that you feel better soon.

I think you are just best to get her hair but into a bob or something and let it grow again, its happened now and there isnt much a hairdresser can do about it.

I would have gone mad as well. My little boy once got hold of the hair clippers and decided to cut his hair with no guard on when he was 3, I had to finish it off and let him go round with a bloody skinhead for ages while it grew out, he looked like a mini thug :rotfl:
