Help-VERY POOR fuel economy on Peugot 106xnd-32.3mpg???!

  • Hello all....well car on 2nd full tank (put some redex diesel cleaner in as I had a 'credit' note with wilco for the THIRD 'plug' in cigarette lighter heater that melted its plug/caused a short-so had to cut lighter out of dash so horn fuse/de-mister fuse would work-but thats another saga!) & done 160 miles & only 1/4 tank gone!!!! Pleased as it's been so cold!!!

Have not had a chance to even look at the thermostat/take it to a garage....HOWEVER the plot thickens (!)

After car has been running say 20 mins there's a 'pocket' of slightly less cold air coming from the left vent (the vent directly under windows) BUT the right vent is completely cold????

Also the front ventilation bits (in dash above gearstick-just below radio) FEEL warm! By this I mean if I put my hand flat on them you can feel a strong warm heat BEHIND them. When turned on (& setting set to forward ventilation) it's still cold (not stone cold but may as well be!) & if you move the 'heat' vent from full hot to cold whilst on you can feel the temp go down???!

I'm wondering if its some sort of mechanical (ie a lever/flap) issue as my logic says that if a)-Matrix is clogged or b) stat is stuck open there won't bee any heat in the matrix so they'd be NO warm feeling by those vents??

Hope this makes sense.....! i just want to get it sorted & not be ripped off...any ideas anyone?

Thought you checked that in your other post a couple of months ago?
You said one hose to the heater was hot, one was cold then, is this still the case?
If they're both hot it's very likely the air flap control has broken.
  • Hi Mikey (you'll be sick of me!), after a 40 min run (26 miles) from Leeds BOTH hoses are v.warm! As I said it FEELS warm if I put my hand over the 2 ventilation flaps (just under radio) but when fan is turned on its still v.cool air (however if i leave fan on & turn temp down to lowest you can feel the air cool down)..

Theres definately warmth behind the 2 vents.....I can hear something move when I move from hot to cold-what I don't know! Is there any definitive way of being sure without taking the dash off??

If both hoses are warm, that would suggest water is flowing, but the air flaps are not working.
You should feel and hear them move when you slide the heater control over.
When you turn the fan on, do you get cold air blowing out of the vents, and does it vary if you move the controls, and does the airflow change as you turn the fan up and down?
Or is there just no airflow, hot or cold?
  • Mikey-you're so patient! I do owe you a pint! Fan/airflow is fine in all 3 settings. The temperature (once car warmed up) DOES vary if you have it say on hottest & highest fan speed & straight away move to coldest-the air temperature DOES drop-from v.cool to cold!!!! I can hear some sort of movement when I move the temperature slider...but can't feel anything (not sure how/what to feel for?).

I don't think the 106 has a valve on the heater matrix, ie the matrix is warm all the time.
It sorts the hot and cold by directing the air either through the matrix, or bypassing it.
If you're isn't working, it would suggest the flaps aren't moving properly if the matrix is hot.
I'm afraid the only way to fix it is to get inside the heater in the car, or at least take the fascia off and see if the cables are connected from the controls.
  • Mikey-I'm off now until 31st Dec. My sisters B/F or my best mate in Norfolk are good with this-& now I have a Haynes book it'll help! Will try & visit them. So from all of what I've said on this (rather long!) thread do you think its more than likely to be the air-flaps-not thermostat or matrix?

Merry xmas to you & I'll completely understand if no reply is on here for a few days (!)!

Thanks for taking the tine to try & help me.

I think the only sure way to find out is to crawl behind the dash and find out the hard way I'm afraid. You may be able to at least get near the matrix fron inside the car. Good luck, and take the Haynes manual with you. :)
