Help-VERY POOR fuel economy on Peugot 106xnd-32.3mpg???!

Hello all,

Sorry to mither you good folk again (!). Just started a new job in Leeds. Journey is 25 miles each way-18 miles of motorway driving (usually only at 50-60mph!) & 7 miles odd of 'town' driving (stop/start under 40mph) . Filled tank up 2 days ago-until petrol pump nozzle 'clicked'. Re-filled today (63 odd miles done) until nozzle 'clicked' again & worked out fuel economy. Was very surprised to see economy of 32 & a bit MPG???!

Admittedly it has been super cold-down to minus 11 & snowy.....! The car was serviced 5 weeks ago & air filter etc checked, oil change, new fuel filter put in last August. No signs of any odd coloured smoke etc...from exhaust. performence is fine too-engine sounds fine. Only other problem I've had is that the heater matrix is clogged (see my other post) but sisters B/F tried to flush it but said was definately clogged (don't know if this has any bearing at all on fuel economy but though I'd mention it-he's very very good with cars but 170 miles away!). Am I worrying un-neccesarily-have i maybe tried to work out economy too soon(ie run it for 300 miles & then take reading)? Is 33mpg acceptable given the super extreme cold & journey length? Are there any very simple things I can check-I'm not really very technical at all!

The parkings costing me £80 a month so i hoped my economical old car would help bank balance that a bit.....any ideas anyone?

i would do a full tank calculation before you start doing things
thne you can see where you are at on MPG
    that mpg is low

    heres a real world comparison

    Filling it with petrol?

You're lucky it's still running at all.

well the 106 diesels are known for being exceptionally economical so there would seem to be a bit of a problem somewhere.

automatic choke stuck on and the car is running far too rich perhaps?

as you've said it could simply be a combination of short journey and exceptionally cold temp, i don't think diesels tend to be too fond of the cold so perhaps when the weather warms up a bit you could find the car is doing more mpg.

    not sure though.

We get about 55mpg out of ours.
Diesels don't have a choke as such, they idle slightly faster in cold weather though.
If it was overfueling you'd see the black smoke.
It's more likely as it's such a short distance you're checking after, one pump has cut off before the other, and you've put a couple of litres more in the second time.
Give it a check after a tank full.

I've noticed my wifes Fiesta TDCI is doing poor mpg the last few weeks, she does mainly short runs but its down from 50+ mpg to about 43-44mpg. I'm putting it down to the really cold weather at the moment.

Sounds about right. It'll have spent half the journey on "choke" and if Leeds traffic is anything like I remember from the years spent delivering there, lots of time sat still waiting to move. How long does the journey take?

Not long-40 mins max for 26 miles....parking is just off the ring road so no 'inner city loop' driving....

OK. Ignore what I said about choke - I forgot the D part of the XND :D

Fuel economy does drop in winter due to winter diesel but 32MPG does seem low. 40 minutes for 26 miles isn't too bad nor is there much time spent crawling. Lack of smoke indicates fuelling is OK. Take it for a trip out of town and out of rush hour and see what it returns.

Not been leaving it on the drive idling to defrost it I presume?
