usually only about 12 minutes work 3 or 4 bolts people need to get moneysaving and buy a haynes manual and get stuck in just remember only a human put it together not some nasa scientist ( who are human as well i suppose)0 -

Take the car from cold on a run. watch the temp gauge. As you drive along the gauge should go up, and up , and up and up, there should be a degrees scale, so it should reach about 90 degrees. At some point after this the gauge should suddenly drop by about 5 degrees. This means your thermostat just opened.
Go for a drive and report back on what your needle does how long it takes to reach what temp and does it ever go down?0 -
Wig-there is no temp guage on a 106-just a warning light if too hot!0

Don't over tighten your thermostat housing bolts, should be about 15Nm which is not very much at all0
-
It's not hard to get to, take out the battery, the housing is bolted to the cold start device on the block, at the end of the top hose.
Two (small) bolts, and it should come off. The main danger is they may have corroded in, and could shear, so don't force it. You can leave the housing on the top hose, or if you want to you can remove the housing entirely, if you do replace the spring clip with a decent jubilee clip.
New thermostat, new gasket, and put it back on. If you have a rubber o ring gasket, a smear of silicone grease helps, if it's a paper gasket, I like to use a gasket compound as well. Don't overtighten, and tighten each side a little bit in turn, not one all the way then the other.
Refill with anitfreeze, probably the blue stuff, and start it up. keep the expansion tank topped up, and then open the bleeed valve behind it.
With the cap on, let it run up to temperature, (and open the valve occasionally, don't scald yourself, and don't undo it all the way). You may have to take it for a drive to get the thermostat to open.
Check for leaks.
Top up again.
Around an hour or so if it goes ok.0 -
65.8 MPG! Well pleased....got 620 miles out of it before into red constantly! Bear in mind a new air filter was put in about a week (250 odd miles earlier) ago (old one was BLACK with gunge....garage should have checked it-guy said 'it has not been off (the air filter cover) for a long long time!)....! So you never know I may even get a bit more next time!
Any of you knowledgeable guys/gals know if any of the diesel additives (to improve mpg & clean out injectors etc) are worth buying? Car is a p plate with around 103000 miles on it..!0 -
Used to use the previous version of this in trucks and my car, but it's now on to a more modern formula.
