Help-VERY POOR fuel economy on Peugot 106xnd-32.3mpg???!

  • how do you know that the heater matrix is blocked?

Does it take a long time to get warm in the car?

If this is the case it could well be the thermostat is not opening and the car is not seeing that its warmed up properly and dumping in fuel thinking it permenantly cold. Depending on where the brightspark french decided to put the sensor!!

incidently i get 42 - 45 mpg from my petrol 1989 audi its great. I have tested this and tested it untill it actaully runs out and it around this figure every time its done over 200k and still going as good as it was in 1989
  • Hi all.....car is kept idiling for up to 10 minutes as it frosts on the INSIDE (!)....also i'm running a 150v car heater through the cigarette lighter as heater matrix is clogged+ usually radio too!!!!!

Think mikey72 may have a point re: pump cutting off too early/late-will re-test mpg after say300-400 miles...

The car is frosting on the inside because the inside is soaking wet, and when it gets warm the air becomes moist. Then the moisture clings to the cold windows at night, and freezes.

So the next time your car is nice and warm, open the windows for a few minutes at a time, let it dry out.
  • You mean those calibrated pumps which deliver metered fuel that the company could get into a lot of bother if they fiddled with it?I doubt it.

Have you not heard of the research that someone carried out. I can't remember exactly if it was Trading Standards, the AA or someone else, that many petrol pumps were not delivering as much fuel as they should be.

Hey guys/gals-ta for the suggestions! My sisters B/F (I'm afraid 160 miles away!) had a look 3 wks ago & says its deffo blocked.....(tried flushing it & could suss this out from that)....there is SOME warm air coming out but nowhere near what it should be.......so I'm pretty sure thermostat is ok.....is there a 'mechanical total novice' (!) way of deffo checking thermostat??

Am also thinking pump 'click' could make a difference-especially when re-filling after only 60 miles.....will wait until 350/400 miles done (or more) before i test it...!

from cold, remove the radiator filler cap, start the engine and let it run, after a while you should be able to see the water in the rad top circulating, this may take a while depending on how cold a day it is,but if you feel the top and bottom hoses they should get warm,

as for the heater, has the coolant system been bled for airlocks?this could contribute to lack of warm air,

try flushing a couple more times with something like 'wynns coolant flush'

Check the water level in your system first by making sure that it's up to the mark in the expansion tank. If it's low, then mix the appropriate anti freeze/water, and top up.

IIRC the heating system on the 106 diesel, is the same as the petrol and will have some "bleed taps/screws" in it's circuit under the bonnet. I think there are 2.

My friend bought one for his daughter, and the heating on it was crap to say the least, so he bled the system using the taps/screws, and he says it now fries you alive as there was air in the system!!!!
That's my mutt in the picture above.

There's only one, just behind the header tank, like a tyre valve in the pipe.

hartcjhart-is the above to test thermostat? Pretty sure my sisters B/F said ok but is that what you mean?

Already had a major coolant change & engine flush & checked for air-locks-none I'm afraid! Heater lets out some heat-but certainly not enough! been flushed out properly but STILL a day or so later water is brownish....just an old car I'm afraid (not helped by the fact I'd probably not changed coolant/flushed for 5 years previous!)-so pretty sure stat is ok but matrix blocked.

Good news is that after 100 miles fuel guage hardly moved-fingers crossed!!!

Hi yes thats what I mean

dont know how hard it is to get the matrix out, but if easy enough ,try pouring kettle descaler into it,use the descaler just like you would for a kettle

  • Matrix is a 4 hour jobby apparently-dash out etc.....the tubes you mention-come out of the expansion (where you top water up) tank & go towards dash area (sorry-not technical!)-felt them before-when car warmed up one is V.warm-other is just warm!
