There are no snow shovels to be had here (normally a snow free area hitherto) and I left my snowshovel behind when we moved...grrr. Will have to think how we can bodge one together somehow.

    Do you have the following?

    A wooden handled broom
A flat-ish plastic tray (the bendable kind not melamine I think it is)
    A drill
    string or cable ties
    marker pen

Put the tray up against the broom, you want the widest part of the tray along the ground and about half an inch below the end of the bristles of the broom. Mark four holes in the tray in pairs so that they are just either side of the pole and no more. One pair about half way up the tray and the next set a few inches up. Drill small holes. The reason for using the bendable trays is so that the tray will not split. Using cables ties or string tie the tray to the broom as tight as possible. These can be used for pushing snow which should make a difference.

Also (i have used this as well), laminate flooring planks work well at shifting snow. Hope this helps.

  • Another thing I have learned with all this bad weather and xmas mixed into one - is that none of it matters one jot!! My cards and decs have all been put away and I have things moreorless back to normal. I have been reminded of how destructive weather can be and also been reminded how futile xmas is. My sons pressie arrived this morning and he cant be bothered to get out of bed to open it - !!!

I am a realist and look at things a different way maybe to everyone else....

I did enjoy seeing my grown up kids though..

  • Our decorations have started to take themselves down. The paperchains that the girls made have started to give notice and come apart and a few cards have fallen off the wall.

Won't consciously fetch them down till after New Year tho.

Our big day is New Year's Day as it is 1 grandchild and OH's birthday so we 2 try to have a VERY quiet Christmas to prepare for the family do at New year - 13 bodies this year ranging from age 98 to 2! Trimmings just have to stay up so long - mainly done by will power and incantations!

I hope it all goes really well for you all. Chanting deff helps in all manner of problems and will power is another winner. Also may I suggest you have a role of sellotape just in case!!!!

    Hi .

it's B& M, not a clue what it stands for though.

    Sorry for the typo.
    I did search B & M - honest!
I know because when I put "B" in the search box it listed : bnm; B&M; B & M - not an "N" in sight. Well okay - just the "n" in bnm.
Apparently B is for Bargain, and M is for Madness.
Haven't time to read later posts, so apologies if someone has already given same answer.

I have just beed throught this thread with a notebook and pen and have my winter list started now.

I am one month ahead of myself than last year so we should be fine.

This year we have saved for it, as last year my hubbie had a 3 week period of enforced unpaid leave due to the snow, so we struggled for money.

This year we have saved 4 weeks wages each so we can enjoyed being snowed in if it happens. Fingers crossed!!!

This year my list consists more of getting things out the loft rather than buying, as I bought a lot last year. Its more a case of extra food and toiletries and some more bedding.

to stock up on dried food stuffs and long life milk.To go around the house and see where I can improve the insulation and to buy bags of salt at reasonable prices instead of the inflated price we were being charged last winter.Extra stores ofporrage oats and stuff that will be put-awayable for the winter .Guarantee it will zoom up in price whenever the cold snap arrives, and thats without the 5% inflation of food prices anyway I bet that by this time next year we won't recognise the price of some stuff in the shops and what we are paying now will see dirt cheap by comparison
