I have learn't that hybernating a tortoise in the outhouse was a bad idea. I have tried to keep the outhouse above 0 degrees with candles, a oil candle thing and an electric radiator at night. Have now given up and moved tortose into pantry which is between 5-7 degrees.
That my neighbour thinks I lost the plot as he seems to keep giving me puzzled looks, I think he is wondering why the outhouse is lit by candles and why their is a radiator in there.
Whilst emptying out the pantry that I seriously need to stop shopping and use what in there. I know its good to prepare but I think if I got snowed in I could last at least 2 months without having to go shopping.
That getting a new boiler that actually work in November was the best idea ever.
That buying a bag of grit salt a few months back was a good idea.
That buying my Christmas presents early was a great idea but wrapping them months ago means I do not know what I am giving family and friends.

eerrrrr....<cough>...there is another possible reason why your neighbour is giving you "looks" of course - the same one I would have and it would translate as being "Ohmygawd - lighted candles with no-one keeping an eye on them = :eek:fire risk".

So - personally - I frequently use candles - but I wouldnt dream of leaving the room/taking the risk of falling asleep when candles are alight (whatever type they are).

    Just a thought...

When you wrap presents early stick a post it note on them detailing who it's for and what it is.

They sometimes come off, but generally they stay on and at least you have a clue for some of them.

Talking about security, everybody please be aware of a burglary ruse which is happening a lot round our way at the moment to people who have UPVC front doors. They're just flicking the handle up at night and when the house is unoccupied, rather than double locking it with a key. If the door isn't double locked with a key, burglars are flicking a device through the letter box which can simply pull the handle down and unlock the door. A lot of people have had a ruined Christmas this year because of this and have lost laptops, handbags, wallets, & car & house keys, which means unless you go to the trouble and expense of replacing car and house keys, you're very vulnerable for them to make a return visit at their convenience.

I'll echo that. My exterior doors have to be locked physically by me to BE locked IYSWIM and all 5 "bolt" type things then shoot across. However - I read a while back that most British upvc doors are missing an element (cant recall what it is....:o) within the doorlock mechanism that puts them at risk. The Germans DO have this missing element and their upvc doors have safe door locks as a consequence.

Cue - I promptly found a locksmith and paid him about £100 to fit in that missing bit in them both - so I now have "German standard" doors:D. Glad I did in the event - as I have a suspicion that someone tried to break through the lock of one of them after I had done this BUT they didnt manage it:D. Cue - me thinking "thankthelord I DID do that..."
  • that having my phone full of credit and with a charged battery was a good idea!

I live in stabsville. I lock the doors all the time with the key even when I take the bins out. Everyone that visits has to wait for me to unlock the doors to get out LOL. It's just second nature to me.

Wish I could afford to move to somewhere decent... sigh! Never mind.

On a similar note, it taught me a few years ago not to use the back yard as an outside fridge as some bu**er scaled our 8 foot back wall and had my case of 24 Boddies away. :(

You mean you didnt put some "fakes" out with something...<ahem> RATHER "stronger" than alcohol in in case they came back for a repeat visit:rotfl::rotfl:

someone used to steal bottles of milk from the doorstep when I was little. My mum put ground cascara in a bottle of milk one day and replaced the foil top. It never happened again. Thieving gits, stealing from a family struggling just to get by!!!
