I can tell you for a fact that there was nothing "special needs" about this child except laziness. It looked like he didn't know how to use a fork and knife - which is shocking!

I would like to point out that not all children with "Special Needs" look like they are "Special Needs" with out knowing the history of the child, who are you to judge. I have a Autistic son age 8, he can not use a knife, fork or spoon, and uses his hands to eat everything, and has trouble speaking. But he looks like any other normal like 8 year old boy. May be this child was the same. Autism has many different forms from mild to the what you would call "Special Needs".

I think the OP is a very judgemental person indeed! Sorry havn't read all the replies, so if I echo others then apologies.

OP - sometimes you cannot see the disability, sometimes to the narrow minded, and ignorant it is not apparent to see if there is a problem just by looking at a child.

I suggest that in future, rather than gawping at other peoples families, you mind your own business and leave them be. They are not hurting anyone at all. Even if the child was a perfectly healthy 5 yr old, it's still none of your business how others choose to parent. As long as the child is not being harmed then I don't see the importance.

It's a bit like the parenting police, who set age limits for others by their rigid standards. Who cares about bottle, dummies, kids being fed until whatever age their parents/they deem appropriate.

I just saw this after I posted my last post and just wanted to say that I could not have put it any better....:T:T:T

You better get used to it over here! It is one of my pet hates, it makes me feel ill if i see someone eating with their mouth open. Or speaking with their mouth full_pale_ Bleurgh. However it seems to be increasingly common.

I actually moved in a cafe as i was sitting facing a girl at another table who was eating a sandwich and was shovelling it in and chewing with her mouth wide open. Bits were falling out on to the table:eek: I couldn't eat my lunch with her in my line of site:o I could hear her from about 10ft away.

I hate it too! And people chewing gum with their mouth open, making a god awful sound! Arghhhhh!

I was taught at home AND at school to eat with my mouth closed and not to talk with my mouth full. My primary school was very good at enforcing this during lunchtime. After you've been asked to close your mouth, or not talk with your mouth full a few times, you start to do it out of habit and no longer need asking.

But, I'm well aware this doesn't happen with everyone and have been known to ask grown adults to close their mouth or not talk with their mouth full.

i feed my 5 year old her dinner simply because she is fussy and if i didnt feed her she wouldnt bother eating it, she eats her breakfast herself and other things but dinner time is the one thing i struggle with with her.

Why are we bothering responding (oops I have as well..doh!!)

I find it amazing that PBS can post when he is such a big fan of Ryanair!!Hardly the height of etiquette...:rotfl:

Seriously, though. When ONE person scrutinises ONE child at ONE meal time and immediately assumes it happens everywhere in Britain:eek:

PBS, if Poland is so great why not stay there? Refuse to visit on 'business'. Don't eat in food courts (because they aren't honestly the best place to enjoy a meal)
  • ive not read all the replys as only nipped on quick but had to say something my son is 6 years old and has several leaning and development diffaculties but loooks like any other child his age in fact he looks older because off his dyspraxia and developmental delays i have to cut all his food up for him and if were out and hes not got his special needs cutlery i have to feed him.
  • I just had to reply ....for 2 reasons.

1 - I have seen quite a few of PBS's posts and the majority if not all are argumentative... so I will assume that they are sitting in Poland somewhere bored posting dross to get a reaction.

2 - I am English and currently live in Poland due to work...and I can catagorically say that parenting... children as young a 8 smoking and drinking, manners.... spitting, pushing and shoving (adults as well as kids) leave a lot to be desired here. The complete lack of consideration people have for others here is an eye opener.

Back to the point.. Of course a 5/6 yr old being fed isn't the norm.. otherwise you would have seen it all the time when you lived in the UK and therefore you wouldn't have been shocked by it... have some common sense!

Just because he/she can drink from a juice bottle doesn't mean he's ok..babies can hold and drink from a bottle at 7 months but can they feed themselves? Not a chance.

Someone has already mentioned baby-led weaning. My DD was also feeding herself from 6 months, She is now 16 months and been using cutlery for a few months now (not a knife yet though). So, yes, a 7 month old CAN feed themselves perfectly well.

HOW ON EARTH can you tell this child had no special needs??????

My grandson is 3 and a half years old and looks like every other cute and gorgeous child of that age - You cannot tell by LOOKING at him that he has Autism..

He cannot feed himself yet although we do encourage him , he is still in nappies , has no real speech and has other behaviour in line with the condition

He cannot use a knife and fork as yet and drinks from a training cup ... The BOTTLE should have given it away for you ... A child in school uniform would NOT be drinking from A BOTTLE UNLESS HE HAD SPECIAL NEEDS!!

A little more understanding would go a long long way in this world!!

My Grandson has been diagnosed recently and my POOR DAUGHTER GETS THIS SORT OF ATTITUDE WHENEVER SHE GOES OUT WITH HIM and its heartbreaking - The LACK OF UNDERSTANDING!!!!

You don't KNOW this child or his family - Yet you make judgements made on observations of what is obviously a closed mind...

But don't worry - We find that MOST people are like this

If you saw my daughter change my Grandsons nappy in a changing room would you make judgements about that too???

His life and my daughters life are HARD ENOUGH without members of the public being so not understanding , judgemental and downright harsh!!!!

POOR KID - I feel sorry for him and his family for having to contend with closed minded people like you staring at him in distain!!!!!!!

( Makes me worry about what my daughter and Grandson are going to have to contend with and go through when he gets older! ) :(:(:(
