Blush. You are right, it is unlocked, the O2 SIM I used to test it was locked had expired. Tried a new Virgin SIM and it worked fine. I had tried a contract Orange SIM which worked and thought the O2 SIM was not working as the phone was locked. Clearly as the Virgin SIM works fine (I made c acall to make sure!) the handset is already unlocked.

Apologies to Browntoad and Drachir for wasting your time on this!

Thanks Baldhead for your help I have spoken to Virgin, have to top the phone up with £30 and then they will arrange for the unlock code to come out to me.
