Was organising a community fish and chip lunch. Bobbed the portions in polystyrene containers in the oven to keep warm. Discovered said containers melting. Scooped up the melted polystyrene and served the lunch on plates. Never said nothing......

Yup, did this about 15 years ago when boyf-at-the-time fell asleep without eating supper so I thought I'd keep them warm .... the polystyrene smelt awful but he ate them later :o

DD (then aged 11) brought home a recipe for making a lemon meringue pie at school -
    1. Buy a ready made pastry case from Mr S
    2. Buy a box of Greens lemon meringue mix

No instructions from the cookery teacher so DD tipped both packets inside the box into a bowl and mixed it well together :rotfl:

A disaster as far as cooking is concerned and not recommended, but one of the best lemon meringue fillings we've ever tasted! ;)

    1) Tipping a very liquid rice pudding down the drain behind the bicycle shed at school. I knew I would never get it home safely on the bus. (Later found much more exciting things to do behind the bicycle shed.)
    2) My first attempt at making a sponge cake as a new bride. It had the appearance and texture of a large biscuit. New husband tried his best but couldn't get it down, bless him. Threw it out for the birds who ignored it in droves.
    3) Made raspberry jelly for the children at school which didn't set. Called it 'raspberry soup' and the children asked for it evermore.
    4) Took an apple pie out of the freezer and served it with custard to guests for pudding. Only, due to my lack of labelling, it turned out to be chicken and ham pie, (not a great accompaniment for custard.)

I won't go on, although the cardboard jelly packet that managed to get itself incorporated into the trifle was a pearler.
Right, those are some of the cooking diasters. there are many more.

I think my most dishonest cover up was just before xmas. I tried making royal icing in the food processor... kablammo. hubby came home as I was washing the jug thing and remarked on the smell of burning plastic. I said it's the food processor and he started going off on one about hw he knew we shouldn't have bought a cheap one, how tesco's could bloody well refund it etc. he assumed it blew up on its own. and being skint and also having a reputation for post-coma-minor-brain-damage klutzyness and occasional lack of common sense to try and live down, and also the food processor being a replacement for the electric hand whisk I'd managed to kill in a similar manner, I didn't correct him _pale_ tesco's swapped the processor for a new one which has been fine ever since. guess why?! nobody's tried making icing in it. I feel sick when I think about it; and I don't like having a secret from the husband.

spending 6 hours making sophie an outfit only to find out it was a size too small. similarly spending two weeks of evenings and spare time making her a jumper only to find the same. and a poncho. and some shorts... I measure meticulously now!

making a dairy free cake icing with solid veg fat and not realising that you have to add a little water if using pure veg fat; marge has the added water lol. came out disgusting and separated into lumps of "eurgh".

trying to make american frosting and watching it pour off hubby's birthday cake.

making a vegetable pie to serve to vegetarian guests and forgetting the batch of pastry in the freezer had lard in it. ended up having to make a whole new pie because I couldn't in good conscience lie about it!

I am looking after DB allotment while he's on hols ,' help yourself,' :T so today brought home basket of beetroot, to make beet relish... weelll had an aha moment and decided to cook all at once in preserving pan, simmered for an hour, all cooked, however, didn't cover the pan [should have done with tin foil! :o ] and later wiped the top of the cooker ...then noticed the streaks of red condensation from the ceiling down
I spent 2 days last week painting the walls and ceiling off white

When married to the first Mr Valli I left icing the xmas cake until the VERY last minute - and, having no children Christmas was celebrated in the 'traditional adult' way...

I have vague recollections of a very 'loosely' iced Christmas cake - resembled a thaw more than 'deep and crisp and even' ;)

Ah! if we're talking about sewing...... When I was at school we had to make a child's dress and matching knickers. The dress looked very odd and I had a lot of trouble making all the pieces fit. I didn't realise what I had done until I found myself trying to make the knickers with one leg and one sleeve. Yes, I had somehow persuaded a knicker leg into the armhole.

My Great Aunt was a teacher way back in the days when to teach you just stayed on at school and helped the younger ones and progressed onto teaching. The class were all making fleecy lined knickers and she forgot she needed a left and right leg and cut the legs out all the same. With no money to buy any more material the class made their long leggedy bloomers with one half fleecy lined inside and the other half fleecy lined outside.
