  • Start with the water as warm as you *can* bear, then add a little hot. Keep your hand in that until you can bear it easily, then add more hot. Keep your hand in that until you can bear it easily then add more hot, etc etc until it's really rather warm. It's totally counter- intuitive but it really takes a lot of the pain out of a burn.

Please note, this is NOT appropriate first aid! It must only be used AFTER you've used at least 10 minutes of cold water on the burn.

  • I've taken the skewers out of jacket potatoes with my bare hand before- I had a lovely burn right across the palm of my hand for days, with a loop of blister showing where the handle was.

  • Many years ago, a dizzy friend actually stuck her finger in deep fat fryer to see if the oil was hot enough!

We have all done something silly and felt the pain to re-iterate what we did was silly!

Sorry to hear about your accident hope that those burns heal quickly. On a serious note I was always burning my hands on the oven shelves (You'd think that I'd learn wouldn't you?) Anyway, bought these brilliant shelf guards from Aldi and the scars are starting to disappear at last! http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/special_buys3_15802.htm They're just a simple slit tube made out of silicone, like the baking 'tins', which fit on the front of the shelves, keeping your hands off the hot bit. I think that they are available from Amazon too. Hope that it helps prevent some more accidents :)
The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

burns can be nasty - and medical advice is that any burn larger than a ten pence coin needs medical attention. I hope yours heals up soon hun.

when I was a 16 year old commis chef I was daft enough to stick my finger in a fryer when someone told me to see if it was hot enough. Only did it once though . . .

Last year I planted some autumn fruiting yellow raspberries in an effort to be more OS by growing more myself. I spent £10 buying them and feel really let down as they have a peculiar after taste, have copious sharp seeds, and if they aren't picked and eaten as soon as they are ripe they go mushy on the canes. Even the birds don't seem keen! What a difference from my poundshop early fruiting variety normal red ones which are delicious.

Could some kind person please give me permission to get rid of them...seems such a waste of money I know but I feel so fed up when I look at them and have to force myself to pick them as I hate waste!

Or you could pick and freeze them until you have enough to make jam - sieve it to get rid of nasty seeds.

The sugar might kill the aftertaste...
