That sounds lovely. Though of course lir would also have to buy an ice cream van so we can eat Mr Whippy on the pedalo (sorry if I've muscled in on your day out PN).

A friend got married a few years ago in the middle of summer. We had the ceremony, then sat down for the meal, and the very minimal speeches. As the speech by the groom ended, behind us all an ice cream van pulled up outside & the groom invited us all to go outside to the van for an ice cream!

It was pre-planned - someone had booked the van to arrive, but the timing was fantastic. & it was lovely after a big meal to chillax outside in the sun with an ice cream!:)

A general question - is it right or wrong to keep up with your internet chums whilst on holiday?

Depends on the friends and the reason for keeping up with internet buddies imo. A bit like saying would you answer your phone whilst on holiday.

I also think it depends on who you're on holiday with. To a great extent, I do feel that for someone with a partner & kids lets say, a holiday is a chance to get some quality together time. However, if everyone then falls asleep & you're the only one awake, no harm in logging on for 5.

Personally, I don't have a smart phone etc, so when I go off, I don't drop in. Y'all have to wait for my return for an update.;) But that is because I'm too lazy/mean to hunt out & pay for an internet cafe, but also cos I'm BUSY!;)

I am revelling in the fact that I don't have a facebook status to worry about.

The nice people thread is my facebook. I get daily updates on Doozergirl's washing habits, lemonjelly's lack of toms and LIR's m&s swimsuit. :D

When we go on hols, it's strictly no internet nor mobile. When abroad we get a local PAYG sim card and the number is only known to close relatives in case of an emergency and that's it.

This thread caused jelly to get all hot under the collar with all the ladies talking about being in swimsuits!:D

I don't do facecrap either. It irritates me significantly. I prefer this thread, for some reason, it is more human. lol hardly appears. And the stuff here generally has some meaning.

" Around 50 people die in this country every hour, which is rather less than 1 per million of the population."

Is that an underestimate of the rate of dying - I've been working on a figure of 2,000 a day? (perhaps that is based on 2,000 per working day?)

Well, I'm pleased you asked that question. :) It's unusual to find someone so interested in mortality statistics. The truth is that I quoted the approximate numbers without looking them up.

The best place to get the figures is the National Statistics website. This linky gives an overview: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pdfdir/pop0611.pdf

It shows a population of the UK of 62 million, with deaths of 554,000 per year (which is around 1500 a day, 63 an hour). There are seasonal variations - more deaths in the winter than the summer. The 63 an hour figure represents almost exactly 1 death per million population.

Interestingly, nobody has yet pointed out the obvious flaw in my argument. You're obviously much too polite here.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I filled up the hire car yesterday. A hundred bucks! F*$%!!!!!!

Sixty five quid to fill a Ford bloody Focus. When's the riot? I'm up for it.

I guess nobody can afford to fill up the petrol bombs.

Can I just wish a cheery hello to the folk in Basingstoke. I hope the weather is good for you there, as it is here.

facebook is the work of the devil. It is almost, though not quite as bad as reading a library book in the bath.

    I prefer this thread too:o:D.

Victoria Beckham gave birth to the Beckham's first daughter today weighing just 5lb 2oz.

The weight of the baby is yet to be announced.

Is anyone else looking at the typical contradiction in the response of the NOTW to the ongoing hacking scandal? Usually, the papers jump up & down with their expose screaming that the buck stops with the prime minister, or CEO. Here however, we have the papers CEO & owners blaming the minions who worked below them.

I cannot for the life of me see how Coulson (david Camerons ex adviser!) can continue to claim he didn't know. Nor can Rebekah Wade. To be honest, I'm starting to wonder if Rupert was in on it.

News Corp will struggle to come out of this with much integrity. Nice to see some of the multinationals pulling their advertising etc though.
