I remember it took about an hour to discuss whether we should use the word 'foci,' or opt for 'focuses' instead. I replied "I'm foci-ed if I know!" but no one laughed.

tee hee. we'll snigger a bit now, ok?

btw, its neither now, rather ''B &Q'' in stead.

    How strange is that!

I thought you would be nearer the satellites, being 30 floors up and less buildings blocking your signal.

Don't most tall buildings have masts and dishes on their roofs?

well, i don't really know how it works, but i could get full mobile reception on much lower floors of a building across the street, but here you can't get anything unless you stand right against the window. don't know why this is - suppose it could be because the mobile signal is coming from the top of the CW tower, and it has to pass through 20 odd floors to get here.

Almost the opposite for dh. The phone HAS to be on and he has to be contactable at any time. :( He had a seat as a trainee where the supervisor used to email at 4am just to test response times and ability to get info across quickly: it was never urgent, some people are just prats and like to make that clear.

you wouldn't catch me getting up at 4am just to annoy someone else, i'd rather literally cut off my nose to spite my face and have a good night's sleep (on morphine, obviously) i think.

Me neither. TBH, I don't think I'd go out of my way if awake to annoy someone else. Not often anyway. Personally, I think its a good thing though: for those less able to spot a prat, someone with self confidence and worth issues this kind of behaviour can clearly alert them and put them on their guard. Its really interesting to see how some people interpret ''leadership'' qualities. IMO, if you are paying well, training well and building a good team its a bit counter productive trying to get the team to avoid working with you rather than engage positively and voluntarily.

I think someone ''right'' for that environment knows that they have to get on with it but its easier, nicer, less irksome working long hours with good humoured people you can respect and knuckle down for/with than resenting every minute you are engaging with them.

I'd have said that! And I'd have laughed out loud if you'd said it ... and I'd have announced that it WAS funny ....

    :)

I've re-read the webpage about what was supposed to happen - and I wasn't wrong. They said it'd be about learning "what's out there, what the options are". Didn't do that at all. Nothing. They said there'd be a "1-2-1 with a skilled careers advisor", there wasn't, I had to sit down and she said "what do you want to do?" and I said "I don't know, I thought I came here to discover that". And she said "Shall I put you on a life coaching course then?" and I said "No. I don't even know what one of those is, so no"... and she got her pen out and was eager to tick that box, so I then said "No, I don't want to go on some happy clappy cr4ppy middle class sh1te". Upon which she realised she wouldn't tick her box with me - that I'd actually expected to be informed and advised... and she was dim and had only been trained to tick boxes. So we parted company ... and I had 2-3 minutes' walk back to where I had been, during which time I was spitting feathers with rage at the complete farce of the whole day.

It was said a couple of times in the afternoon "I guess you're all here just to get your funding" - and I said "No". I was there to find out what was available, get some actual 'advice'. Find out what's where.... but they just wanted to tick some boxes and get their funding.

I think (she didn't make it at all clear) that if I pick a course from this place and can say why I want to go on it (so some made up sentence about how going on this course will enable me to .... forward and .... achieve .... fulfill... benefit to me and the world at large.... " then I get it paid for.

I don't want to, the courses are sh1te... but I'm almost tempted to find the best one I can and do it anyway. It's free. But most of them are really filler/hobby courses, rather than a strategic path into something worthwhile.

Rant alert - B&Q are rubbish!!!!!!

Shed delivered yesterday. Get home to find it is the wrong !!!!ing shed. The one they've left is half the price I've paid. Person who stayed in rang them & said so. In fairness, the guy admitted it was his/B&Q's error. Promised I would get a call first thing in the morning.

So at 10.45 (well past first thing if you ask me but there you go) I call them owing to no call. Get a short answer that they'll call me back with a delivery time. No apology for not calling me.

fast forward 3 hours, still no call. Ring them. Get put on hold. Get put through to wrong department. Get put through to second wrong department. Finally get put through to the person I spoke with this morning. Unable to get hold of delivery driver. Promised to call me back within 15 mins. Bet the !!!! I have to call them again.

& the singularly worse bit - at no point has anyone apologised!
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

I think I want to complain really .... but no idea who to... and if anybody'd care.

All this "funding" that's been going on for people in XYZ over recent years has all been about wasting money with box ticking.

Adult Education was decimated as all colleges/places ONLY put on basic literacy/English/maths/Turn on a PC courses because they got funding for that... so that's all they tried to run. And as they were all doing it, they were duplicating effort and all just treading water. It'd have been better if they'd all agreed to each cover one bit, so they weren't competing... and then put on some proper courses. But no, proper courses all disappeared in the past 10 years.

So... re earlier in the week:

    - I'd like to complain that people are being herded and abused and let down, so others can tick boxes and get funding.

I might have found one that's OK. It's a short course, "just 6 lessons" it says, distance learning stuff.

But no idea of the level. It's an NCFE Level 4... but I've no idea whether that's equivalent to swimming 14 yards unaided, or whether it's like a Grade C at O level.

Sounds interesting stuff though... title contains the words: Decision ... and Analysis.

They fluff it up though, call it a Diploma.... I hate that fluff - that's meaningless. A Diploma, gained by enabling somebody to tick boxes and managing to get to the end of the material without being distracted by Facebook.... I've no faith in all these new fangled ways, it's not good, solid, proper learning - with bits of paper that are universally understood. Therefore, I can only assume, any 'Diploma' is self-granted and meaningless outside of their accounts and marketing department.

It looks easy - and sounds useful though... so I might have a pop at that. Contact the box tickers and say "wanna do dat init"

It depends - my mother did a Diploma recently at Birkbeck College in London, and it took her a year to do it (music course).
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.
