4.08am ... and I have spent the last 2 hours trying to fiddle with the php in twenty ten.... no idea what I am doing, but I know what I want.

I've got an ad server block, which I've shoved into a float left div.... and I want that to appear at the top left of every post and page. So there I am in editor mode, in loop.php and I can get it above the post, but not under the title and floating to the left of the text.

So, 2 hours down, no joy ... means I now have to take things to the next level as what I am after is clearly in another file... it's inside one of the functions.

So... off to copy/paste the code randomly all over that (when I find it), until it finally works :)

I've already struggled as I forgot to turn off my firewall and I was wondering why the file wasn't saving (it thought it was under attack so blocked me)... then I realised my chitika premium plugin was conflicting for the space, so I moved that to be 'after' rather than 'before' the post.

Now it's off to discover where the functions are hiding.

I've decided to standardise on twenty ten as I'm fed up with spending hours fiddling with themes that I can't work out and chewing up years of time trying to find a new one/one that works how I want.

This is the bit I hate....

Update 04:58. Well, I read the whole coding is supposed to be a showcase for what's possible, intended for good coders... but I persevered - and the closest I came was to realise I didn't want to do that at all. Then just 4 minutes ago I hit a spot of genius - and finally pulled it off.

So now I have the block right where I want it, in posts only - now got to put it into pages. I was trying to be too clever by putting it into the loop code that's pulled by pages and posts, because on the home page there are multiple posts, which then generated more ad blocks than are allowed in the TOS... could have saved 3 hours by not trying to be clever :(

OH now finds the chatter of the dmin girls a bit distracting and want's his own office so we have a spare room that we may convert for him to concentrate in sometimes. He's same as NDG...can't concentrate when interrupted or there is noise.

I'm the eldest of 4, so once I get stuck in, other people talking to each other doesn't distract me. It's when they want me to respond that I get narked.

I don't necessarily think home education is bad. Infact, sometimes I think it could be better. BUT, the huge caveat to that is that the kids are given breadth of experience not normally achieved at school and also given a lot of opportunity for socialisation (and preferably engagement with local community) and activity.

I think school is pretty useful. It's far from being all about education, it's also learning to get on with people who you don't necessarily particularly like or admire. A vital life skill.

I do not have a child, but goodness knows if I'm to ill to work a bit I'm too ill too mother full time (friend's baby for a few hours exhausts me enough!)

Looking after any baby for a few hours exhausts anyone, no matter how fit and healthy.

The biggest issue with open plan is how bl00dy noisy people are these days. Years ago there'd be open plan, but it'd be quiet and work-like. Now people randomly wander around, clamped to their mobile phone, standing behind you chatting, mobile phones ringing here there and everywhere, text-arriving sounds... it's non stop chitter chatter and banging, crashing, bleeping, ringing, chirping, bad music blasting out like a 70s disco as somebody's left their mobile on their desk and gone to the loo.

Years ago people'd be working ... and the only phone would be standard sounding phones on desks. Now you're assaulted from all sides by all the bizarre and overly loud and annoying ringtones... followed by people wandering around shouting into mobile phones... before they'd be sitting at their desk talking into a non-movable phone, quietly and professionally.

    I don't like it...

Thankfully it's not tolerated here. Phone has to be on silent. If it goes off you have to buy a tray of doughnuts from krispy kreme! Also mobile reception is very bad when you're 30 floors up, so doesn't tend to be a problem now!

    How strange is that!

I thought you would be nearer the satellites, being 30 floors up and less buildings blocking your signal.

Don't most tall buildings have masts and dishes on their roofs?

Will they award it for a work that has pretty obviously been crafted specifically for that purpose?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Almost the opposite for dh. The phone HAS to be on and he has to be contactable at any time. :( He had a seat as a trainee where the supervisor used to email at 4am just to test response times and ability to get info across quickly: it was never urgent, some people are just prats and like to make that clear.

I shouldn't have gone, they misrepresented what the day was about, they were !!!!s.

I know it's not much help, but I used to find this sort of thing happening to me when I worked in education. 'Useful' courses that proved frequently to be anything but useful, just linked to some adviser's personal hobby-horse.

My worst experience was the five days I spent on some kind of steering group, where I was included because someone else put my name forward as an 'expert' practitioner. I found that really wasn't what they wanted, and everyone else seemed to be speaking in code and weird acronyms.

I remember it took about an hour to discuss whether we should use the word 'foci,' or opt for 'focuses' instead. I replied "I'm foci-ed if I know!" but no one laughed.

It was the longest week in my life. :(
