no, just sprinkling and sprinkling, picking them up dipping their beaks in. they are physically capable but need to be shown how. Its the same with hen chicks, but a bigger responsibility with these as they are more dependant for longer AIUI. chickens pick it up in minutes, I'm told these guys take weeks. We'll see!

Anyway, I'll still be squealingly exciting if they hatch. I'm not sure they will.
I hope they do...don't forget to take a pic for us to see:D

Anyways.....off to bed now as early start tomo...and I had a lovely day off too.....caught up on the laundry and cleaned the house top to bottom. The fun just never stops :D

Sorry DG, another one for you.

MY walls are fully rendered, the architect has not specified any thing in particular but the builder has asked whether he should be using thermal blocks - are there big advantages n terms of U that offset the additional cost?

I don't really know! There are different sorts of thermal block. I don't think they make all that much difference in U-values as the U-values are pretty low for block anyway with insulation stuffed between, you'd probably be saving 0.00s between different types of block. Much bigger differences in windows where you'll be losing more heat. Fancy blocks for lower U isn't on the list for us. H uses Thermalites mainly because they're lighter and therefore easier to work with on double storeys. Not an issue for you!

You also get propolis.....its the glue, I'll told you can eat it right out of the hive and its ofcourse uber healthy.

I have that, I use it as an antibacterial hand gel. Its nicer than the alcohol ones as much less drying. Great for libraries when you can't get to a tap every 15 minutes.

I've probably only encountered a proper tablecloth in a very small number of indian restaurants I've been in.

    What about at home?

don't. Its a misconception that country people, even hunting people all hate foxes. some do. Most like them.

My darling younger sister manages to combine a loathing of foxes, and hunting regularly, with being an almost life-long veggie.

re hating things, I should be hating these bats, but we're stting here watching them swooping against the sky, chasing each other, doing arial acrobatics, and who can complain. You'd pay a fortune to see people do this in planes, and it wouldn't be half as magical.

I did ask my darling Mama about bats today, for you. She said the bats were no problem, it was the bat-people who did her head in.

They had to build a bat-loft bit for the bats. Who then moved out of it and back into the utterly unsuitable for them loft next door, the building of which would (according to the bat people) have killed them off for good.

Oh gosh, came here looking for light relief, and I get foxes and chickens....:(

I've just had to give a sick chicken euthanasia.....well, that's the polite term. I haven't done that for... er...43 years. It doesn't get any easier, either. sad-smiley-036.gif

Next, our friend rings to warn that two foxes have been doing the rounds of chicken keepers in the village before it's properly dark. This is the smallholders version of the alert that shops do when there are known shoplifters in the store.

No badgers here, I'm delighted to say. Plenty dead at the side of the roads though, some of which may even have been hit by cars. ;) I think a determined badger could go through our defences here.

Congrats to Doozer and FC for the big things that are shortly happening for them. :)

Whilst it's illegal to disturb the bats, is there any law against your ma getting a cat, maybe two? Maybe just borrowing them for a week?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Its not illegal to go up and make repairs to holes in the roof etc during the ties the bats aren't in the roof. For us that is between October and february we are told. Onc theyare out and the holes repaired....well, problem sort of solved.

If that is done you have to provide suitable other accommodation for them. (of which we have some things that can be easily converted but they aren't south facing (bats prefer south facing lofts).

I agree with NDG's mother, we like the bats and are happy to make them a new home, but the bat man was a bit batty. He wanted us to give them a dehumidifier and some heating....while saying we couldn't have workmen up there to give US heating. He tried suggesting we couldn't insulate because there only heat was from us and if we insulated to stop losing our heat we'd be cutting off their supply of it and then said it would be best if we didn't do any building work to keep them content. I did point out if the house is allowed to topple and rot through lack of repair we'd all be homeless. He pursed his lips and said ''You have to think about it not from an angle of what you want, but what is best for the bats''.

I LOVE the bats. Bats do good and useful things here, we want them to stay, but we're going to reach a compromise with them over whereabouts.
