You and me PN, let's buy all his turbines and sell the power back to the govt. We'll make billions of watt hour day miles per joule and be rich! Rich!

It's a glorious winters morning today. Cool (for Sydney) and sunny. Not a cloud in the sky.

I love this time of year but Aussies are such wusses about cold and wet weather. They are in Sydney anyway.

We've a long weekend to look forward to too, it's the Queen's birthday.

when I was 18, an American bloke bought me a bottle of Chanel No. 5. then completely ruined it by saying he'd bought it because his Mum used it....

It smells rank on me. It used to on my sister, but something changed after she'd had a child and it suited her. I think (very unscientifically) is reacts to some untold measures of maturity (landmark life events or something) to suit one or not.

How is a riding arena different from a riding school? My sisters have the latter, at my parents' house.
Most terms are used somewhat interchangably.

I tend to use ''arena'' (whch technically is an enclosed sports space, and most ''schools'' have a fence, but not always!) for speaking to non horsey people because I think its more identifiable and less confusing. Its not necessarily accurate though. Somewhat cattily I'd say most people exercise their horses rather than school them, (even when they think they are schooling) so somewhat subconsciously I avoid the word.

''correct'' word is rarely used because the majority of horse riders ..(.not by any means the same division as ones who could school rather than exercise) couldn't get the word right:

manege: indoor or outdoor riding area
menage: if not something to do with animals more varied in species then something fun but not to do with horses.

I could probably live with all three, circumstances being right. The collection of animals has long been a feature of life, an indoor menage would be very, very useful and DH didn't take kindly when I suggested extending our ''situation'' to include another chap to help around the place by day.

edit: the other funny thing in a manege is the lettering. We have an area I marked out here, and dh could understand why I was walking around with a tape measure and chanting ''A fat brown mare can hardly ever kick''. (the other one is All king edward's horses can make big fences...ways of remembering the letters as you lay out a short arena with markers). A long arena for me goes: a fat pretty brown riding mare can hardly seem ever very kicky.

that's rather the point. The architect's firm (? Company? School? Manege? Menage?) who deal with this on almost every build/refurb they do say it seems as if the stuff, the literature and figures are designed to baffle and sound eco-good and finance sensible...not always correctly.

    Aww thanks.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

EAs rarely get it right either. :)

Another favourite of mine is where EAs write about streams 'dissecting the land.' Rural Scene have been getting that one wrong for years.
