But 6558 square feet... would be an 80 foot square.

    Tis a biggun missus.

My architect strongly advised we wait for wind power to be better developed. He said that he saw the potential but the returns just weren't there yet to make it viable in most situations in the domestic scale units he'd looked into.

I was reading an article in one of my magazines where they had tested existing turbines in different areas for their efficiency over a year. One turbine they tested used more electricity than it created!

I work in feet and inches. No idea what an acre actually looks like... I mean, it's not something you ever know/see is it "This is precisely 1 acre", so you can remember/compare.

fwiw I find an acre tough to picture. My mental ''point of reference'' is three. So I roughly guess as a multiple or division of that.

OK ... now, you said about a dinghy ... but have you looked at:
    - sit on kayaks
    - stand up paddleboards?

You can even get inflatable stand up paddleboards... I've youtube'd them in the past and they're as rigid/strong as anything.

Or, seriously .... I think you should get a pedalo, what about a swan pedalo?

And make a beach at one end, with lovely soft sand.

And get a couple of corylinis australis (spelling's shocking).

Edit: Cordyline Australis was the correct name. http://www.palmcentre.co.uk/Admin/Gallery/images/Cordyline-australis_large.JPG

They grow quite quick, well, 1-2' a year.

You're so posh, thinking 20x40 metres is still a pond ... then trying to compare it to a riding arena (something I've never seen, ever, even though I've always lived in rural places/villages)..

riding arenas: somewhere Katie Price is often found= not posh. Monied possibly (we don't have one). Posh, not necessarily!

Its ''a good size'' for a pond. Its not, IMO a lake. But we'll continue to call it ''Lake Cake'' for the sake f DH's dinghy's name. When we get one.

The average football pitch is about 1.8 acres, apparently. An acre isn't much space for sheep, but is a massive garden.

Note: an acre is in that weird zone where when you take a photo of it, it seems massive, but if you are there in person it just looks like a small field. Most of the fields round here are a hectare.

So, let's make a full shopping list:
    - sand/beach
    - line of palm trees
    - small waterfeature/waterfall, tumbling onto rocks/slate... then probably allowed to dribble away across the sand.
    - a beach hut
    - swan pedalo
    - stand up paddleboard
    - sit on kayak

    See how classy that'd be??

And when those trees grow, you could throw a hammock into the mix

I've just had one of the best lol moments I've had for ages. The cats went flying off me. :) dh would LOVE a swan pedalo. :rotfl:Still, same problem about getting it home, (and affording it!). He'd still want a dinghy. I think the thing is that he can just get it it and have a kip.;)

He rowed round the edges last year (we don't have oars so he used a couple of sticks and it took a LONG time even in the small pond.)

Unsubstantiated anecdotal I heard on the radio from a caller is that there's a Tesco that has a wind turbine on the site, demonstrating its greenness... but company policy was to run the blades on electricity when there wasn't any wind, to give the illusion they were doing their bit.
