Are you eventually going to turn it into one of those "trendy" wild swimming ponds?
we'd like to. we got a quote for a diy one and it was eye watering and pushed way-way on the back burner. If we can do it cheaper working out how to get clear, clean water we will. If not, bit of vaseline over cuts and in we jump. Actually, haven't done it yet. Its about 1/3 empty atm. And its previous use was prosaic. (as I was saying yesterday in Greenfingered). There is a reason dairy farms have great big holes and its neither picturesque nor fragrant a reason:D:D.0 -

it might be a pond, but only if those are bonzai trees around the edge!0 -

the oak, which is the only ''big'' tree, is actually about 1/4 mile away, so...in terms of perspective, that helps make it look bigger:D0 -

The oak looks twice as far as the edge of the lake. So the lake is about 200 m in length.
What's the comparable for lakes?
Olympic pools? So thats 4 times the length of an olympic pool.
Better comparable is an athletics track. 400m track has diameter of about 127m if it was circular, which its not. So your lake is about the size of the whole stadium including seating etc.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Its nothing like that big! :rotfl::rotfl:
I'm thinking about in in relationship to things I do know the size of, and I know its wider than 20ms. but not as big as 50 metres maybe 40 metres? If pushed to guess that's what I'd go for. (some of that width is the banks, and not sure how much. Length well, less easy. I can go and pace it out. Not as long as 60ms I don't think. (Thinking of the size of a riding arena for comparison...in fact thinking that way its narrorrower than 40 meters too.).0 -
If the oak is 1/4 mile away that's 402m and the far edge of the lake looks to be half that so that's 201m and the rest of my calculations went from there.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Awww bless him, that's lovely: http://www.practicalgardenponds.com/files/2039883/uploaded/Nate.jpg
You're so posh, thinking 20x40 metres is still a pond ... then trying to compare it to a riding arena (something I've never seen, ever, even though I've always lived in rural places/villages).
And yes, that was a random photo - I just liked the waterfall idea, with the stones stacked up. I want one of those one day, not as big as that, but a bit less structured.0 -
I found a googlemaps area tool which really oddly takes me to an OLD ariel pic not the current one. Amazing! I can see the pond with much less overgrowth....
I'm so glad I tried now!
the not very accurately done points suggest this:[Map Height : Small - Medium - Large]Output : Current Area436.23 m²0.00 km²0.11 acres4695.54 feet²0.00 square nautical miles
and there is more bank than I realised.
On going back to calculate the bank area Plus pond I realise that I think the pond is emptier than I've seen it, in fact, it might even be empty!
Bank area is:
Output : Current Area1710.09 m²0.00 km²0.42 acres18407.30 feet²0.00 square nautical miles
so I tried what I think MIGHT be the edges highest I've seen (though its a guess as now you cannot see the edges at all) and I get something bigger:
Output : Current Area609.27 m²0.00 km²0.15 acres6558.11 feet²0.00 square nautical miles
I have no idea if any of this is right!

I work in feet and inches. No idea what an acre actually looks like... I mean, it's not something you ever know/see is it "This is precisely 1 acre", so you can remember/compare.0
