OK, so I went to the Derren Brown show last night.

I'm not going to give any spoilers. Each tour he does, he makes a plea at the start of the show asking people to not tell what is in the show. It is more fun to have the suprise. I agree, & it would not be fair for someone with a ticket to read what'll happen.

However, having been to every tour he's done, he still has the magic. The show is still a great one (arguably slower in the first half, but the 2nd half is fantastic). The big trick is still there. He still does stuff that you can't see coming. He even tells you how he is doing some of the tricks during the show, & you still don't know how he does it!!!!

firmly believe that everyone should see one of his shows live (not on tv/dvd/internet) at some point, as the genuine experience (plus the chance of being dragged up on stage - as very nearly happened to me last night ) is enthralling. But at least I have come away with a souvenir or 2 thanks to the great man.:)

Treat yourselves nice people - your are all worth it!:)

You know, I'm not a chip person, but chips are exactly what I fancy now. I'd even try'em with gravy.

I'm an "in moderation" person (except when it comes to cheesecake;)). However I do love my chips & gravy. For PN to post up about trying some wierd biryani that she'd never seen nor heard of before after telling us that she can't be sure whether to try the chips & gravy in case she doesn't like it is naughty!:naughty:

PN, trust me, you'll love it! Push the boat out & have a battered sausage with it!:D

I was doing that when I discovered a lucky St Christopher charm, which has the Virgin Mary on the reverse for extra protection.:) That's been on my key ring now for about 50 years....

How lucky can it be? After all, somebody else lost it.

On the swimming side, there's only one trick that works for me. That's putting my head completely under water for a few strokes, then lifting up, breathing and going under again.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I went into the library yesterday, in embarrassment as my book had fines on it.

Luckily (on this one occasion) its all automated so I can return the book without comment.

What happens if the fines due exceed the value of the book? A lot of old paperbacks in my library that are priced on the back at 5.99, 6.99 etc Can they fine you more than the book is worth. If you see that is going to happen is it better to say you've lost the book?

Also notice they hire out electricity monitors for free. May take them up on that at some point.

I do not miss the tube in rush hour. Not one bit.

I'm thinking of going to see dh next week. Any one able to recommend somewhere in the City to eat on a mid week evening? (NOT brick lane)...not a great wine list...I'll be driving home...

i am usually get in to work either before the rush hour starts, or after it has finished - i don't think i could go back to a job where my manager cared what time i showed up for work. without fail, i always miss the rush hour on the way home, because even if i leave at 5 on the dot, i go to the gym afterwards. the evening rush hour is never as bad anyway.

every so often, i don't pay attention to what time i'm leaving home and end up at waterloo at 8.30, trying to get onto the jubilee line. that is hell on earth, and i'm afraid that my attitude towards other commuters means that my occassional presence in morning rush hour makes it even worse! it's like football - as long as you don't raise your hands, you can only get a yellow card!

I like John Terode's restaurant Smiths, in Smithfield. City fringes rather than city proper, but the food is great and for what it is, very reasonably priced. I'm a vegetarian, so you wouldn't normally expect me to recommend a meat restaurant, but the veggie meals there are fantastic and I've seen similarly rapturous looks from my meat-eating companions. Make sure you book the dining room as it has different sections with different menus. I've only eaten there at lunch time but I understand that it is open evenings too.

    Here's the website:

I've eaten on level 2, which helps when looking up menus...

Yes, I am surprised you recommend it, but that's a good surprise. Its a popular spot for work meals, so might be nice for dh to try it under different circumstances. :)

edit: my baby for the day hasn't turned up yet. I hope they are ok. I'm hoping he'll settle in the shady garden with me for a wee while, otherwise I think we might go for a stroll, maybe feed the ducks. :)

First time I travelled on the Drain (waterloo and City line) I did not realise that everyone stood politely in a line where the doors opened and proceeded on in a calm manner and instead on seeing a train there when I got on the platform I walked straight on - won't be making that mistake again...
    I think....

Yes they can fine you more than the book is worth, though in practice, fines stop after a certain period of time, so people get large fines generally as a result of having several books overdue, not one. Having said that, if you also lost the book, you would be charged for the replacement cost of the book as well as the fine, so you would definitely not be better off doing this! The biggest cause of large fines though is bringing DVDs back late, not books. Always get DVDs back on time or you get extra hire charges, rather than fines in many library authorities.
