well hellooooo!;)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
You can tell that the wheels must be turning the engine rather than the other way round if you go down a steep hill. The engine speed will increase (you can see it if you have a rev counter otherwise you can hear it).
I know begger all about cars but I know a bit about physics.0 -

It does take freewheeling in to acount for the MPG is worked out by measuring the fuel used at that time and the speed you travel, so it uses the fuel used to idle to give the MPG.
At lower speeds this shows more for obvious reasons.
But for those who do not believe me here is a quote.
http://www.hypermiler.co.uk/fuel-saving-tips/our-top-5-fuel-saving-hypermiling-tips4. Coasting. Shutting the engine down when stopped or while coasting up to stops/turns is one of the main reasons for hybrid vehicles’ excellent city fuel consumption. We would not ever suggest coasting with the engine off but simply remove your foot from the accelerator when approaching a junction or red light. A modern engine uses no fuel at all when costing in gear.
The point of going slower down a hill is fairly irrelevent (well in real world driving it would be) as we all have to break etc. You can coast in 6th nearly as fast as rolling but you still have other road users, corners to get round etc so whatever extra speed you get from rolling out of gear will be lost the next time you break.
Also don't forget you have a flywheel in a car, that will be spun up to speed in gear it wont out of gear so I am fairly sure in normal road driving you will hold more speed and more control in gear and the flywheel will help keep that speed.
It is 100% the correct way to get better MPG not rolling out of gear, the only other better way is turning your engine off but that could mean a nasty accident as your steering lock enables, lose hydrolics.
The only case it would not be is if your car is older and does not have an ECU that recognises how much fuel to use to stop a stall.
If you have a modern car use gears don't free wheel.0 -
I've experienced these free-wheeling/staying in gear petrol efficiency debates before...
Anyways, I didn't watch the wedding, & frankly folks, the major part of the past 5-6 pages is boooooring!
I have finally finished The Upside of Irrationality by Dan Ariely. I know I've said before, but it was a great read, and I would really encourage everyone to have a read of it at some point.
I now need to pick a book to follow up. I need to pick a good one, as with the census stuff having impacted on my time a lot, reading has dropped down the pecking order, & I really don't want it to. The nice weather could in theory also adversely impact on it too.
Talking of the census, I'll be all finished friday. I can't wait for it to be all over! I am looking forward to getting my time back.
I've been pottering in the garden. Preparing for planting out the beans and peas. I have also planted some peppers, as I said late last year I'd try & grow some. I've only put 4 seeds in though. I'm about to plant some spring onions.
The "normal" onions are coming along. The carrots & beetroot seem to be doing very little at the moment. I'm wondering how long before I should start worrying (note, I am actualy worrying already - I'm wondering how valid that concern is though).
I'm another wanting some rain. Just to sort out the garden somewhat, the lawns, and the bowling greens...
Which is another wierd one. I play for one club, 2 teams in 2 seperate leagues. One league I'm on fire (won every game, most very well too) whereas the other I can't find a win for love nor money...:(
Hope everyone is well & enjoyed their break. I didn't get one...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
I didn't understand any of the car stuff, to be honest. I'll just keep doing what I do0

Just taking a break from last minute revision...it's doing my head in and making me more confused than usual. If I remember anything at all this afternoon, I will be very very surprised, my mind is a complete blank.
I hate exams.....always have and always will.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

First rule of exams. You stop revising the night before, at 6pm. You do not revise on the day of the exam. It is important to be as fresh as possible when you enter the exam.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”
