Really - I'd have thought it would be an ideal place to set up a video reconnaissance database...

...and developing the conspiracy theory, surely they could have gone in with non-lethal weapons to try and capture him alive for 'intelligence extraction' followed by a trial?
Last thing they'd want, the absolute last thing, is a grave to become a site for pilgrims.
    I think....

Again, a trial would've been a nightmare. they wanted to get shot of him, permanent-like.

I now need to pick a book to follow up. I need to pick a good one, as with the census stuff having impacted on my time a lot, reading has dropped down the pecking order, & I really don't want it to.

"Notes from a small island" by Bill Bryson.

    "Bad Science" by Ben Goldacre

"London as it might have been"

Read Bad Science a year or so ago - really good book! I also liked Why People Believe Wierd things by Ben Schermer.

I'm leaning towards Paradoxymoron by Patrick Hughes. Or Possibly a Jack the Ripper book...
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

I thought about the rolling in/out of gear thing today. I was going gently down hill, approaching a queue of traffic that had stopped at a red light. My choice was (a) take it out of gear and reach the queue, or (b) leave it in gear and therefore slow down and have to put my foot back on the accelerator to avoid stopping several car-lengths short of the back of the queue. I get what Really is saying about keeping the engine turning etc, but in this particular situation, would it still be better to stay in gear? I'm another one who knows very little about cars but quite a lot about physics.

Incidentally, my brother asked me a question about this that genuinely came from his experience. There's a hill he goes up on his way home from work. If he approaches it at 40mph and tries to get up it in neutral, he only just gets to the top of the hill. If he approaches it at 50mph and goes up it in neutral, he finds he is doing 30mph when he reaches the top. His question was why he loses 40mph in one case, and only 20mph in the other. It was only when I started to explain that I realised that the numbers were perfect for a physics question - I set it to my class as part of a homework sheet! Those of you who like such things, have a think!

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

It's not to do with speed, it's to do with distance and inclination.
To compare the speeds is to look at the wrong parts of what's going on.

If the hill were further to the top, at the same inclination, then he'd find he went the same distance when the difference in starting speeds were taken into account.

So - send him out to find a bigger hill :)

My Yahoo account has been "compromised"

I keep sending EMails to myself and the missus and kids (as they are the only addresses saved)
