Even relatively cheap cameras have come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years.
I bought my last one in 2006 and it was "a good price" then, so not cutting edge.

If I was using one every day to make a living selling pictures, I'd go for something with the potential to change lenses & so on, but for most of us, a point-and-shooter will now deliver reasonable quality for everyday web use.
I've a certain amount of experience working for a top/pro as well as running an international microstock. So I know what the top pros would do - but I'm also aware of the microstock industry and the different needs of its audience. If you can shoot a good photo/snap and present it well, with a gushing descr1ption, somebody somewhere will want it. I have realised in life that you don't need to be the best at anything, you simply need to be "good enough" and to enable your market to find you. Aside from that, digital's "free" to shoot. I figure that some of the stuff I am making might sell as a product and as wall art. I can't explain Plan A to you, but it's genius. :) This is a well frequented board and I don't want all and sundry reading my genius and thinking "that's genius, I'll do that"

Just about all the point & shoots do video now, but some do/don't let you zoom as you film.
If I am making/doing something and saying "like this..." I won't be in a position to be zooming ... it'll be item/hands closer to the lens time!

A few weeks back, I had to buy a first chain saw, so I went to a local independent shop and took their advice. I ended up with a mid range model of a good brand, neither too cheap and underpowered, nor too well specified and a dangerous waste of money on a noob like me. I'd suggest you take the same approach. Anything mid range by Panasonic, Sony or Canon is likely to work well.
Not sure if there are any independent shops. I do hate it when people use the word 'local', it doesn't apply down here.... I guess there might be an independent if I do a big round robin 100 mile road trip.... but that leaves me with issues such as my inability to take in verbal instructions, meaning I couldn't take in what they were saying and digest it. I had this issue the other day, trying to buy an amadeus drill and matching diamond burrs. I'm sure the man thought he was being clear, it wasn't sinking in.... it appears that diamond burrs don't fit amadeus, so I had to choose if I wanted an amadeus or diamond burrs.... I think he only had to state this 8x before I realised what he was actually saying :)

    A camera's a more complicated thing.

I should be whining about this on the Praise/Vents board, but can't be 4rsed, nobody would care anyway, so I'll tell you lot, who also don't care, but I'm going to moan anyway.

    :)

Just got "tempted" by one of the side panels, some freebie £16 of Origins stuff, no spend. I wasted a whole minute of my life going to that link, then reading about a "nationwide" offer, which turns out to be a big fat lie. You have to go to your local/nearest (HATE THOSE WORDS!!) Origins counter with some old ropey product and they give you a shiny new thing. No idea what it's all about as I don't actually buy that stuff. So, I feed my postcode into the store locator, nothing, nothing for 100 miles (the limit of their search mechanism), so I did the drop down list and the nearest is 90-100 miles away. So that'd be £24 in diesel + parking + car running costs and a 4 hour round trip for a £16 freebie.

I do wish organisations would STOP calling themselves nationwide when they don't have at least one shop in every county.

Anyway, if you want one it's an Origins Cleanser or Facewash here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/cheap-free-beauty-deals/origins#deal9401

Hello all - invited onto this thread. We exchanged on our new flat today! Yay!

Lovely to have you on here, NDG. I hope you'll stick around.

Huge congratulations on exchanging. My exchange was about 3 months ago (with completion a few weeks later) so the level of excitement is still fresh in my mind. Enjoy this stage while you can - I am now at the "been living here for weeks but house still full of boxes" stage, which is not nearly so encouraging (although I still love my house, so I'm happy).

Am I right in thinking that you're in rented ATM? When do you hope to complete? Will you have some overlap between getting possession of the new flat and surrendering the keys to the old one? It does make moving easier if you can manage a bit of an overlap, especially so you can go back and clean and fix everything to maximise the amount of deposit you get back.

People on this thread enjoy each other's successes vicariously, so do tell us what the flat is like (no need for identifying details of course) so we can rejoice with you. What is it that you most like about it?

I think the trouble is that most people tend to assume, without thinking, that everybody else's life is like theirs, the things that are available to them are available to everybody, and the issues that affect them affect everyone else too.

I'm sorry it's being so frustrating for you, but you post reminds me how much I appreciate this board for introducing me to a bunch of people I would never have the chance to meet IRL, and consequently widening my outlook on life. You're a big part of that for me, PN, so thank you.

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Hi NDG, It is good to have you back posting reguarly especially as it means the barstewards haven't 'won'. Enjoy the new home (key word which I think many of the so called bulls and bears do not get). WE are one year in at our new home and about to kick off a 'small' extension project. My 40% of a job is secure for the next 3 months so time to spend approx 120k me thinks!

PN I know you suffer from lack of facilities down there but remember that is precisely the reason why many people choose to live there and you have your beaches that I envy you every time you mention them. Once our extension is built you can come and live in the 'annexe' but only if you give up the ciggies - I am sure you could walk into a 60k project manager role around here if that was what you wanted.
    I think....

    On my android I use:
    titanium backup
    angry birds
    barcode scanner
dtd calculator (for tesco deal discussed above)
    fancy widget
    guitar tuner
    msn talk
myplayer (old version which gives live bbc)
    google maps and sat nav
    google translate

and the default android browser. If you are on droid 2.1 I think flashlite is useful.

Have you rooted, removed network operator bloatware and upgraded rom?

Modaco seems the best site for newbie android tips by handset.
    I think....

Not quite as far but similar story here, about a one and a half/two hour drive for the two nearest (in two different counties), possibly more if the M25/A12 is a begger.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

On my non android I use

    Google maps
    Internet
    A mini version of office
    Erm....erm......the texting bit? The calender?

I tend to just use it as a phone to be honest, with the back up of also being my calender/appointments diary and occasional use of the internet when it feels like it.

It's not that I am non techy, I just cannot justify having a posh phone whilst on benefits....plus I hate touch screens (no bleddy good when the screen goes, at least with a mobile which has buttons, you can still make a call when the screen has gone), so probably wouldn't have one even if I could justify it!

Congratulations NDG, I have been seeing you around on the boards, so knew something was happening re purchasing a house.....it's so exciting though isn't it? I remember the day when we got the keys to our property, I felt like doing cartwheels down the road. No more having to get dressed to pick up the post (we had lived in a flat previously), no more worrying about the landlord letting himself in, no more worry about rent reviews....just ours to enjoy.
